Smokeout coming next month
By Beth Horne
Mike is a 22 year old college
student who has been smoking
for five years. He says •he can
quit anytime he wants.
On November 15 he and all
other puffers will have a day to
prove their willpower at the
Great American Smokeout by
quitting "cold turkey" for 24
hours.
The national Great American
Smokeout is the culmination of
the four-week Fresh Start Quit
Smoking Program created by
the American Cancer Society
(A.C.S.). This year's goal is to
get at least one out of five
smokers to quit smoking fom
midnight to midnight.
"Just under 36 percent of
American smokers attempted
to give up cigarettes on
Smokeout Day 1983," the
A.C.S. reported. Eight percent
of the 36 quit for 24 hours and
over four percent quit for bet
ween one and eleven days after
the program ended, according
to the Gallup organization.

The Fresh Start Clinic dates
for the Capitol Campus are Oc
tober 18 and 25, and November
1 and 8. Sign-up sheets are in
the nurse's office. The fee is
five dollars for Penn State
University students, faculty,
and staff, and $lO for general
public. Clinic events will take
place in the B.C.A.C. Lounge
-- W-132 Olmsted -- from 7-8
p.m. on those days. These
events are designed to help
Mike and other puffers "kick
the habit."
Actor Larry Hagman, in his
fourth year as National Chair
man, stressed the "Adopt a
Smoker" theme. With this pro
gram any non-puffer or ex
inhaler can sign adoption
papers and help his "adoptee"
quit smoking. Anyone in
terested in this program should
see Jean Kresge or Peg Matin
chek in Health Services, W-102
in the Olmsted Building.
The Great American
Smokeout, first observed in
1977, is an annual nationwide
celebration in its eighth year.
