After winning the Keystone Athletic Con ference two years in a row, cross country coach Bud Smitley is optomistic about winning districts this year. "I think this will be our best year," he said. Starting its third season, the 1984 cross country team will face a "much more dif ficult scheldule," according to Smitley. This year's team includes eight seniors: team captain Joel Hager, Alan Newhart, Dan Miller, Brian Bachman, Greg Nissley, Rob Ijegath, Rich Bergins, John Kerecz and three juniors: Bob Jurinko, Joe Sleleton and Mike Henry. "We have a solid core of runners," said Smitley. "We have four guys -- Miller, MID-TOWN PIZZA Call for IVi2e 9 r s y prices Mid-town Plaza 450 E. Main St., Middletown, Pa. SALADS All You Can Eat. The scoring in cross coun try is different from most other sports. The first five members of each team count for scoring purposes with the next two displacing the other team. For example, suppose one team has seven runners crossing the finish line first. They have earned 15 points (Is2'3s4ss) with runners 6 and 7 displacing the opposi tion. The other team finishes 8,9, 10, 11 and 12 fora total of 50 points. With the lowest score winning, a 15-50 score is a shutout.
