Capitol to host PA Golden Glove mee
By Angelo Vecchio
This summer will bring the
1984 Summer Olympic Games to
Los Angeles. The event will draw
citizens and representatives from
all over the world, as premier
athletes compete for gold in what
should ultimately be a show of
world unity through ,
sportsmanship.
Part of that spirit will be felt in
the Capitol Campus gymnasium
Saturday night, March 17, when
the Capitol Campus Athletic
Association (C.C.A.A.), Penn
sylvania Golden Gloves, and
Budweiser present an evening of
championship amateur boxing.
It's possible that any of the
twenty-four boxers on the St.
Patrick's day card will end up
competing in the 'B4 Summer
Olympics. This is how it works:
Fighters compete on a regional
level, to advance to state finals.
Then the state winners square off

A Sports Editorial by

The Pennsylvania Golden
Gloves boxing competition that
Capitol Campus is hosting March
17 is a big event, not only for our
campus, but for Middletown in
general.
Three Harrisburg area television
stations will send crews out to
cover the bouts, and I would ex
pect other media people to be on
hand as well.
This type of attraction will help
bolster the image of Capitol Cam
pus, especially if everything is
handled flawlessly.
Student support for the boxing
show will help the campus in at
least two ways. First, for every
advance ticket sold, the Capitol
campus Athletic Association will
receive one dollar. Second, a

trials.
Capitol Campus is hosting the
Pennsylvania Central District
Championships. There will be
twelve bouts, getting underway at
8:00 p.m. and ending at approx
imately 11:30. Each fight will be
in a different weight class. The
classes are as follows: 106 lbs.,
112 lbs., 119 lbs., 125 lbs., 132
lbs., 139 lbs., 147 lbs., 156 lbs.,
165 lbs., 178 lbs., Heavyweight,
and Super Heavyweight.
At least four fighters from the
Harrisburg area are scheduled to
compete. They are: Eric Smith,
125 pounds; Dywane Tennent,
147 pounds; Vincent Boulware,
165 pounds; and Jay Johnson,
178 pounds. According to Capitol
Campus Athletic Director Bud
Smitley, Boulware is expected by
some insiders to do extremely
well, and has a good chance of
making it to the Olympic trials.
"Chances are, at least one or
two of these fighters will make it
good turnout at the Golden
Gloves competition will improve
the chances of Capitol Campus
being asked to host this type of
program again in the future.
The price for general admission
is about the same as a movie
ticket and there will be at least
three hours of action. Boxing is
an excellent sport to view up
close, in the arena. Television
coverage of professional boxing--
and, for that matter, amateur
boxing, is O.K. But you gain a
special appreciation for the style
of the sport by seeing it live. It is
more than just two men trying to
out-punch each other; there is an
athletic art form to boxing.
This show will provide a
"golden" opportunity for
everyone to see a quality boxing
card for a relatively small price,
while supporting the Cuitol
Campus Athletic Association.

"Pennsylvania is a big boxing
state. We're hoping for a turnout
of about 800 people for the event,
but we'd be happy with any
good-sized crowd. It will be a
