Seven from Capitol attend model U.N. conference

A seven member delegation of
Capitol Campus students attended
the University of Pennsylvania’s
18th Model United Nations Con
ference held November 10
through 13 in Philadelphia.
The delegates, chosen through
the International Affairs Associa
tion, were Joe Oddo, Chris Bar
rett, Graham Mitchell, Peter
Mekosh, Frank S. Stramara,
Tony Kanakis and Panos
Xynarios.
The group’s advisor, Clem
Gilpin, has been involved in
model United Nations conferences
since his undergraduate years at
Virginia State University.

After accepting the invitation to
the conference, the Capitol Cam
pus delegation was assigned to
represent Algeria. The members
then researched key issues that
were to be debated, and presented
their views from the position of
their assigned country.
The atmosphere is competitive
and recognition is given to in
dividuals, not whole delegations.
Capitol’s Frank S. Stramara,
one of nine members on the court
of justices, received recognition
for his knowledge and understan
ding of the legal ramifications
surrounding the KAL flight 007
incident in Soviet air space.
Capitol’s seven members com
peted with 4,500 other delegates
from such schools as Princeton,

Yale, Dickinson, Michigan and
Memphis.
The people who went as
delegates from Capitol will serve
as the core of a model United
