    Runners bring campus first championsh
By Robert Rejmaniak
For the first time in Capitol
Campus history there is a first
place trophy in the Multi-
Purpose Building's showcase
thanks to the Cross-Country
team.
"The team members have '
worked hard. They won because
they wanted it," says Coach
Bud Smitley. "There were no
loafers on the team this year."

One other reason that could
have attributed to the cham
pionship victory is Smithy's
unique way of coaching. He
runs a strict practice, but
doesn't expect too much. "Our
practices started at 3 p.m. and
most of the time we were done
by 4:30 p.m.," Smitley said.
"We didn't run too long, but
when we ran, we ran hard."
"I realize this is a tough cam
pus academically," Smitley
said. "The idea was not to turn
the guys off to running by hav-

ing long, exhausting practices."
Perhaps both hard work and
good coaching were responsible
for the team's success, or
maybe it was just a love for
running. Either way, the
Capitol Campus Cross-Country
runners are champions in the
truest sense of the word.
Team members included: Al
Feiertag, Dave McNamara, Al
Newhart, Kris Rubino, Greg
Sloditskie, Jerry Trently, and
Dave Wicks.

You can't teach old dogs new
tricks, but they won't roll over
and play dead either.
The old dogs are the Alumni
basketball team. They come
back each year to teach the
young pups what basketball is
all about. The Annual Alumni -
Varsity grudge match will be
held November 13.
"It's really a good natured
game," says Jack Wilson. "It
makes the Friendly rivalry bet
ween past and present teams
fun."
Wilson is one of the Alums'
superstars returning this year•
