The Coach."
Where Are We Going?
Our society has become so hypocritical! When a judge takes it upon himself to
make an example of a basketball player by sentencing him to 10 years in jail for
shaving points in a game, I've got to question our so-called system of justice.
Are we taking our sports too seriously? The message that I get from Judge
Bramwell is: steal my belongings, beat me, rape my wife, murder my kids, burn
my house, but never never never mess with my sports.
Are sports that all fired important? Hell, it's fun to go to a game and spend a
day at a friend's debating thy merits of the American League versus the National
League. Yes sports are fun. But, are they to be taken that seriously? Seriously
enough to sentence a player to 10 years in jail for shaving points during his
playing days at Boston College? Our society is going haywire. The judges in this
country don't sentence rapists to 10 years in jail. Drunk drivers who kill don't get
10 years. Child molesters and wife beaters don't get 10 years in jail. What the hell
is going on? What kind of mentality is our society showing? Where are our
priorities? Where have we gone wrong?
Okay, hold it. The Coach isn't saying let this guy go. Steve Kuhn broke the law
and he should pay for his crime. How about letting the punishment fit the crime?
However, our legal system has deteriorated so that that's utterly impossible
these days. Yup, makes sense to me all right. We've currently got admitted illegal
drug users playing in the NBA, but that's OK. Yup, makes sense to me all right.
Here's the mentality that we are dealing with nowadays. Prosecuter Edward
McDonald labeled Steve Kuhn "The Judas of Boston College." It was a disloyalty
for fixing games, not selling information. He sold himself down the drain, he sold
his school. What eloquence

Well, Mr Spiegel, you are about as consistent as ever. You and your buddy D.
Reider are not practicing what you have preached. What is the Coach talking
about?
In the October 29, 1981 issue of this paper, Spiegel and }Wider chastised my
article for its all-around sports coverage. I quote, "If we would concentrate our
efforts solely on national sports items covered in the numerous dailies across the
country, that would defeat the whole purpose of a sports column in a biweekly
newspaper. We always welcome sports articles that adhere to this basic
policy . . ."
Now boys, especially you Kevin, the article on page 16 in our last C.C. Reader
does not adhere to the policy that you yourselves have laid down. "The Final Final
Review" may be a decent article, but it breaks your editorial policy by appearing
on the sports pages.
This action by you renews my faith in your lack of intelligence.
Dear Matthew Smith,
Enjoyed reading your article about the fabulous Baltusrol Golf Club. It was an
educational and articulate story. I am an avid golfer and maybe we can hit the
greens some time soon. Have you ever played the Spook Rock Golf Course in
Suffern, New York? It's listed in the top 100 toughest courses by "Golf Digest."
Keep up the good work.
