A.D. at Happy Valley and his refusal to accept the coaching job at New England.
As for the Pats, Paterno noted that he saw their last game against the Colts and
he thought that 3 elephants and 8 cheerleaders could beat New England. More
power to ya, Joe!
Getting Involved With intromurols
By Darrell Reider
Now that the Winter Term is in full swing, intramural athletics are dominating
the sports scene here at Capitol Campus. Sixteen teams are registered for the
volleyball intramurals and each team will proceed through the term on a rotating
schedule with all the games slated for Monday and Thursday nights. The
basketball intramurals have generated twelve teams this term and each will play
a schedule based on Tuesday and Thursday contests. In the event of a scheduled
home varsity basketball game on campus, all intramural action will be postponed.
Wednesday nights this term are loaded with intramural bowling matches at
the Middletown Lanes. Two new teams have been added to the competitive field
this term, vying for the all-important trophies when the league'closes at the end of
the term. The C.C. Reader will keep you up-to-date on all the intramural athletics
this term, complete with action photos later this term. So keep an eye out for the
Reader, hopefully back on a bi-weekly track for the remainder of the term.

The Final Final Review
I bet you have seen or read just about
every recap of 1981 there has ever been.
Sports Illustrated named Sugar Ray
Leonard their Sportsman of the Year, v
the Sporting News named Wayne
Gretzky their Sportsman of the Year,
while the C.C. Reader Sports Depart
ment has named the Penn State Football
team as our Sportsteam of the Year.
It was a close decision between the
Penn State football team and the Ltd's
intramural bowling team, but in the end
the football team edged out the Ltd's
because the Ltd's choked down the
strech, and Joe Paterno's team didn't.
I guess one of the reasons the PSU
football was chosen was because of their
thrashing victories over Notre Dame,
Pittsburgh, and USC. Having the
toughest schedule in the nation and
winning ten of twelve is mighty impres
sive. Granted, their loss to Miami (FL)
was shocking, but finishing up with
victories over the number one team in
the nation, and the best college running
back in college football history, is im
pressive.

So 1981 was a good year for the Los
Angeles Dodgers and Fernando
Valenzula. He would have been in the
running for our Sportsman (Sportsteam)
of the Year but he finished fourth,
behind the football team, Ltd's, and the
Nightriders. Maybe next year.
In basketball -- it was the Bird-man
from Boston that stole the show. The
Celtics, having rallied from a two-game
deficit over the 76ers, blew away Moses
Malone's Maurauders in the champion
ship series. Larry Bird displayed that he
is the best all-round ballplayer in the
NBA, with the 76ers' "Dr. J." a close
second.
In hockey -- the great Gretzky and
the Edmonton Oilers stunnrd the hockey
world when they shocked the Montreal
Canadiens in a three game sweep.
Gretzky single-handedly foiled the
Canadien attack. The Islanders, how
ever, foiled Gretzky in the next round
and then proceeded to dust the Rangers
and play with the North Stars, before
winning the Stanley Cup -- again.

In football -- it was the arm of Jim
Plunkett that was the edge in Super
Bowl XV. The Oakland Raiders beat the
Philadelphia Eagles 27 - 10 before 76,000
screaming fans. Billy Sims won the
Rookie of the Year in the NFC, and Joe
Cribbs won it in the AFC. San Francisco
was second to last in the NFC West (4 -
11( and the Cincinnati Bengals were 7 - 9
last year. Have they come a long way!
In boxing Sugar Ray Leonard won
two titles, Marvin Hagler destroyed Vito
Autofermo, Larry Holmes was floored
by Renaldo Snipes, but came back to
beat Snipes in the end. Roberto Duran
keeps trying to come back. Muhammad
Ali and Joe Frazier tried comebacks, but
who cares?!
Closer to home, the Vipers beat the
Ltd's in Fall bowling, the Hersey Zero
Squad won Intramural Football, and the
Bombers won the Volleyball. The
Varsity sports included a 9 - 9 season
from the bowling team. a 7 - 19 season
from the basketball team. This year.
Jim Flatley says "We will be better."
