C.C. Reader The Reel By Rick Morrison PA:4VA El "Arthur" is a film which balances comedy and sadness better than any movie I have ever seen. Although it is billed as a comedy, "Arthur" has its share of teary moments, particularly when Arthur loses his faithful servant, father-figure Hobson. Arthur (Dudley Moore) is a wealthy playboy who hasn't quite figured out what he should be doing with his life. Hobson, his valet of many years, (played superbly by John Gielgud) is the only Rock Talk By Gene McGovern The Go Go's is an all-girl group debuting with its "Beauty and the Beat" LP. It is one of the brighter new groups to hit the music scene this year. "My Lips Are Sealed" is a cut off the LP that is receiving a lot of airplay. The beauty part of this group is that it isn't another garbage new wave group like Devo, the B-52's, or the Plasmatics, who play trashy, simplistic, imbecilic songs. The Go Go's has a sound very similar to Blondie's first four LP's. "Beauty and the Beat" is a very good album with many bouncy tunes. About the only weakness is its lack of diversity. The lyrical quality and variance in melody do not match that of Blondie, but the album does have heavier guitar licks and more pulsating drum lead-ins than any of the Blondie albums. With a little more refinement, the Go Go's could turn out to be America's newest supergroup. By the way, does America have any supergroups yet? They all come from Britain. World person who knows Arthur isn't ready to grow up yet. Arthur plays with his expensive toys and with his life. Hobson works and looks after Arthur's every need. Arthur takes nothing seriously; Hobson takes everything seriously. Without Hobson, Arthur would be no thing but a drunk, millionaire playboy. With Hobson, Arthur is a charming, drunk, millionaire playboy because the two characters bounce off of each other and complement each other so well. Arthur's father forces him to choose between marrying a girl the family approves of but who he doesn't love and The following people are tied in the album contest: Mike Miller, Mark Ba shore, John Tillison, Tom Farquhar, Jeff Witt, Paul Phillips, and Rick Matthews. Here are three tie-breaker questions. In case of a further tie, the winner will be picked out of a hat. 1. Name the three lead guitar players who played for Mott the Hoople. 2. That is the simple premise which the story of.. the film is based on. But getting to the point where Arthur finally chooses his alternative is where the fun of watching this movie lies. You may suspect that Dudley Moore is playing much the same character here as he did in "10," a wealthy man, drunk most of the time, who doesn't take life seriously and goes to any length to meet the woman of his dreams. However, the character of Arthur and the character he portrayed in "10" are quite different. That is attributable to Moore's treat ment of this part. The personalities of these similar characters could have merged together but Moore never lets that happen. Liza Minnelli is adequate as the girl Arthur loves but I'm certain that her part could have been played equally well or better by a host of other actresses. This is an extremely good film because of the superb balancing of the comedy and sadness. The comedy is generated by Arthur's mischievous, drunken behavior and Hobson's straightforward honesty and serious nature. The sadness is generated by Hobson's death and Arthur's touching reaction to it. The only disappointment of the film was the engagement party held for Arthur and his fiancee Susan at her family's mansion in Southhampton. That scene could have been developed more SURPLUS JEEPS, CARS, and TRUCKS available. Many sell under $200! Call 312-742-1143, Ext. 3501 for information on how to purchase. The possibilities for char acterizing the wealthy socialites of Southhampton and juxtaposing them with the character of Arthur were limitless. But the director failed to give that scene enough attention. "Arthur" is one of those films which doesn't force the viewer to make any heavy or heady moral decisions. It doesn't ask you to sit through two hours of soap opera love scenes, it doesn't give you any overt violence. "Arthur" is purely a light, entertaining film in which you can laugh at somebody else's predic ament and enjoy thoroughly.
