An Out Of The Way Experience
ing themselves at Stone Valley.
It started out as a reunion for
returning students after a long and
hot summer. But in the end, it was
an experience never to be forgotten
by the students.
On Friday September 11, 1981,
the student leaders of Capitol
Campus met at the Student Leader
ship Conference at Penn State
University, Civil Engineering
Camp, Stone Valley. The reason
for the conference was to help the
students become aware of their
leadership responsibility. There
were different seminars planned
for the students, and each one gave
a different perspective on leading a
specific club or organization.
Students that participated were
the new Resident Assistants, the
Student Court, members of the
SGA, Editor of the Capitolite,
Members of the Meade Heights
Board of Governors, Graduate
Student Union, WNDR, C.C. Read
er, DPMA, Public Affairs Associa
tion, ASC, PSPE, ASME, XGl's,
Married Student Union, Photo
Club, Beta Chi, Black Student
Union, Delta Tau Kappa, lAA, Phi
Beta Lambda, Returning Women,
Social Committee, and of course
Young Democrats. The "leaders"
of the leadership conference were
led by the Director of Student
Affairs, Dr. Jerry South, and the
coordinator of Student Activities,
Kathy Branigan. Other people
that directed the students along
were Clem Gilpin, Ed "Action
Photo" Beck, Kathy Lavety, Pat
Murphy, Peg O'Hara, Bud Smitley,
Leslie Zuidema, Bob Hamill, Dr.
Marian Krieger, and John "Speedy"
Pellecchia.
One of the highlights of the
conference came early Saturday
morning when Ken Varcoe, Penn
State Assistant Vice-President,
said that we were going to play a
game called Prisoner's Dilemma.
After spending a long Friday night
partying, students seemed hesi
tant to play the game. The game
came down to trusting your oppo-

nent in making financial decisions.
In the end there were a lot of
surprises and arguments but every
one who played the game enjoyed
it tremendously.
Throughout the weekend, semi
nars were set up for the students.
Dr. South introduced everyone and
welcomed us back. The students
were then introduced to Bob Curry,
a man who runs his own Manage
ment Consulting Firm. He talked
about leadership and even had us
drawing pictures about our up
coming plans for the school year.
Kathy Branigan, who deserves a
great vote of thanks, said her part
about Time Management along
with Dr. Marian Krieger. In that
session, all of the students must
remember Do your A's not C's,
and do it now! Organization is the
name of the game. Peg O'Hara and
Bob Hamill discussed Planning
and Conducting Effective Meet
ings. Then we moved on to Pat
Murphy and Clem Gilpen who
discussed Motivating and Main
taining your Organization's meet
ings. Here we discussed recruiting
new members, and keeping them
interested. Finally we talked mon
ey with Dr. South and SGA Trea
surer Karen Kurek. (For those
clubs that have not submitted a
1981-82 budget, contact Karen
immediately.)
Everyday started with an op
tional event for the students,
entitled "Wake-up Jog with Bud
Smitley." For some reason, this
was not a popular seminar because
it began at 6:30 a.m.! I told Bud,
"don't even come near my tent at
the dreadful hour." So, rumor has
it, Bud jogged alone.
On Saturday night, the students
were treated to some country music
and some square dancing. It was a
sight to see. Usually I am accus
tomed to seeing the staff all
dressed up and sitting behind a
desk squandering with their prob
lems. But that night, it was to be
very different. It started out when I
saw Dr. Marian Krieger in her
purple suspenders, so from then
on, I would have to be ready for
what was to follow. It was square
dancing time, as Bob Doyle and
the Allegheny Strings treated us to
a great time. Couples were formed
and groups performed to the de
light of the bystanders. Not being
in my Fred Astaire shoes, I was
delighted to see many couples
dancing their "feet away." Some of
the "eye catching" couples were,
SGA President Roberta Bronson
and RA Mike Riotto, Bud Smitley
and Dr. Krieger, Ed "Travolta"
Beck & RA Donna Ashby, Kathy
Branigan and Clem Gilpin, Dr.

South and Judith Polliard, Henry
Rebinski and Corrine Blouin, and
Tish Whalen and Chief Justice
Darrell Reider. There were many
other great dance teams dancing,
so .I commend all of them. By one
o'clock it was over and there were a
lot of tired people, but most of all I
think that new friends were made.
On Sunday morning the stu
dents were pleased to hear that Dr.
Theodore Gross, Provost of Capitol
Campus, came out to speak to the
students and answer any ques
tions we had. As at side note, for
some students it was the first time
they met Dr. Gross, but all thought
he was very gracious to talk to us,
and very interesting to listen to.

Student Activities By Kathy Branigan
We would like to extend a warm
and pleasant welcome to all new
and returning students. Capitol
Campus' Fall 1981 Orientation
should prove to be the best in our
fifteen year history. Various activ
ities have been planned through
out the week to help all students
become acquainted with each
other. On Sunday, September 20,
there will be a mouth watering
chicken barbeque picnic on the
Student Center lawn, and follow
ing that, there will be a swinging
square dance at the Student Cen
ter. During the day on Monday,
there will be a Student Affairs
Meeting, Admissions meeting,
library tours and program meet
ings which all students should
attend. Consult the Orientation
brochure for time and place. Mon

attended the conference, all of
them mentioned that they had a
great time, and met a lot of new
people, got to know the staff better,
and getting a better grip on them
selves for the upcoming year.
A special thanks to Kathy
Branigan for her help and her
patience with us (especially since
the debut of the new singing group
Kathy Branigan and the Pips
makes their first world tour next
summer). Dr. Jerry South deserves
thanks for the arrangement and
for his part in the conference. Dr.
South deserves even more credit,
for feeding the students with an
"A-1" meal plan for the entire
weekend. To the rest of the staff,
thanks, on behalf of everyone.
