Page 6 zz.z.zzz2z. l ' Well, kids, this is it! My last column-- and I intend to go out by saying things that have plagued my mind in my years at Capitol Rumors have it that the soccer team is getting the axe. Well, if this happens, I sure hope that Steve, J.R., and all the returning players form a soccer club and get games that way. I have heard faculty and staff alike say the soccer team is a pain to the Athletic Department. Why is this?? Some say it's a pain due to lack of interest by soccer players. This campus has strong soccer po tential, which is shown by the indoor team where some new players joined up and proved themselves. Why they didn't come out for the outdoor team can be answered in two words: no apprecia tion!! We get $1.50 to $2.00 in meal money, which is almost enough for a Big Mac and a large Coke. This is obviously not enough money to fill a player after almost four hours on the road and one hour of constant running with a 10-min ute halftime break. Sure, our record hasn't made Sports Illustrated, and is almost too embarras sing to even go in the C.C.Reader, but I don't see other campus sports--which get cheerleaders, more meal money, $4,000 uniforms and a huge schedule--doing any better. The baseball and basketball teams get a lot of attention and pats on the back which they deserve. I realize these players are putting out a lot of their time and they deserve credit, but the soccer players were run into the ground every day at practice and especially games. How these soccer players are a pain to anyone I don't see. The nets are put up and the field lined by players, practices are attended by players, and games are attended by a few loyal fans. This whole season, the only faculty-staff people I ever saw at a game were Professor Trunk and Counselor Ed Beck. So I am on my knees to the Provost or anyone who can help us. Give the soccer team a break and show a little gratitude to these athletes and you may see a strong Capitol soccer team unfold before your eyes. But don't give them the axe--they deserve a lot better. Now then, what else can I talk about? Oh yes, Homecomings should be a part of this campus. Why not roll out a couple barrels, invite parents of players to the games, and put on a show of all the clubs or something? I view this as a sure-fire means to draw a crowd to a sporting event, and have some fun too. It was an idea that was kicked around all year, but now that there is a Social Committee, why not plan it and have it? I've done a couple of baseball player interviews and from what I hear, the team may just surprise everyone and have a superb season. Coach Melchiorre has had the team practicing. I go down to the gym and see a lot of players working out on their own, which is a good sign of player desire and team spirit. DUCH'S LAST CORNER By Ken Aducci, Constant competition for spots on a starting lineup usually produces a good team, with a good lineup and bench. Since it is a fact, in baseball especially, that a strong bench is needed, I would predict a good team. The basketball team has shown this campus a record that doesn't tell the whole story. Those who witnessed games could tell you this. The team was always playing hard in every game and winning most of them right up to the end. The team lost some key players during the season. Had they not lost these key people, they would have turned in a much stronger showing. Individual stars were present at Capitol. Everyone on this campus has heard the name Jack Wilson. Jack put out a tremendous year for the press and stat sheets. Dave Shannon and Ron Kuzo were also stand-outs for the team all year. The back-ups and coaching staff put out a lot of man-hours and devotion, and I for one would like to say, "Way to go, guys--your time and effort are appreciated " All the sports teams from bowling to baseball deserve a lot of credit. I also feel that the athletes and coaches should receive something more than the little letters given out at the end of the year. Maybe jackets could be bought. Why not use the money that was raised for our new campus sign for this purpose in stead? (Although a new sign may seem important to some of the people at the top, to the average student it will just be another stop in our beautiful country for birds flying south or dogs just passing by.) I would also like to thank Bud Smitley and Ruth Arehardt for their time in helping me get this column done. Bud does a good job of running the gym, scheduling, and handling the many other assignments an athletic director is re sponsible for. With a bigger budget, I'm sure Bud could produce winning records for all the campus teams. Ruth is always behind her desk with a smile, ready to help anyone or offer advice to those who need it. I would also like to thank the Intramural referees who are a big help to the Capitol Intramural program, which is another big job for Bud• and Ruth. The Intramural program offers a lot of good competition and lots of fun to students. I only wish I could be around for softball next term. Well, I guess I'm done thanking everyone and I sure hope that at least a few people enjoyed my column. By the way, Harry Moyer will be looking for a new Sports Editor, so somebody get up there fast before the job gets taken. I would like to make one more thank you to Harry and the C.C. Reader staff for having me, and for putting out a damn good paper. P.S.--Thanks to Rosann for giving Den nis his racket back, and I will continue to work on the mystery of the mug.
