PSU vs. Pitt
Will Joe Patern-over A Winner?
zz_zzz.zzz:'
I would like to start off this week by
congratulating Harry Moyer, our be
loved Editor-In-Chief. Harry puts forth
unbelievable amounts of time into the
Reader and I have been hearing nothing
but good things about the paper lately.
So a big pat on the back to Harry (Keep
up the good work!).
I'm getting sick of talking about the
Eagles, because everyone knows how
well they're doing, but their big test is
coming up. The San Diego Chargers are
going to work on the Eagles' only weak
spot, "The Bomb." The coverage of John
Jefferson and Charlie Joiner is going to
be the toughest job for the Eagles'
defense all year.
Now, I would like to reveal some
thing that most of you already know. I'm
from Pittsburgh, and I'm damned sick of
hearing all non-Steeler fans say they're
out of it. Aw c'mon gang, how can
anyone who knows anything about the
sport say the Steelers are out of it?
Their injury list is clearing up so look
out, NFL, and watch close--the Steelers
are going to come thundering back! ('Nuf
said!)
The soccer season ended on a sad
note. This campus has the potential. to
put out a winning team, but too many
good players just come up with some
real bull for excuses.
Another thing (not to put down Bud
Smitley because he is one heckuva hard

worker) is the teams this campus must
play. Spring Garden, Eastern and
Southeastern colleges all have the po
tential to be playing University Park.
One good note to the team though is that
these three teams are the only three to
beat us by more than one goal.
I won't make any excuses for the
team, because we all put in a lot of time
and hard work. I would like to say
thanks to all the teammates who played
a good, hard season. These are: Captains
Bob Heitzman and Ken Aducci, Jim
Scott, John Ostaziewski (leading scorer),
Rick Brinser, Steve Ashton, Mike
Casshessian, our hard working goalie,
George, Jim Breem, Ed Higgins, Jose
Amdo, Warren Jones, Tom Swingle,
Larry Mel, Roger Kircheim, and coach
Jack Lenz, as well as photographer Rick
Joyce (ar, ar, ar). Anyone interested in
playing indoor soccer, contact Duch or
Bob at 944-5226.
The basketball team came out smok
ing in preseason, notching up two easy
victories. The starting five of Dave
Shannon, Jack Wilson, Barry Cummings,
Ron Kuzo and Bob Hassel put on an
awesome bombing display in their two
games, as well as the alumni game. I
didn't make any of the games due to
plain forgetfulness, but I'll make the
home games and be able to give you a
first-hand report.

The traditional intra-state rivalry
between the Nittany Lions and the Pitt
Panthers concludes the regular 1980
football season next Friday at Beaver
Stadium.
The Lions, 9-1, meet their toughest
challenge since September 27 when the
Nebraska Cornhuskers "shucked" Penn
State 21-7.
Pitt features a balanced attack both
offensively and defensively. All-
American senior DE Hugh Green will be
an important factor in next week's finale.
Green has been such an outstanding
defensiveman for the past four years
that his number 99 has been retired by
the university.
Then there is senior QB Rick Trocano
who has taken over Pitt's all-time
passing record held by Dave Havern
from 1968-71. Trocano, who started the
year at free safety, has thrown for well
over 3,800 yards as a Panther.
Penn State will need to stop the
passing attack of Trocano and the
defensive play of Green if they plan on

performing well in the Fiesta Bowl
during the Christmas holidays. Last year
Penn State defeated Tulane in the easily
forgettable Liberty Bowl 9-6.
The Lions have improved during the
last several games, opening both the
N.C. State and Miami contests with
passes. Curt Warner and Booker Moore
have gained considerable yardage on the
ground, while Joel Coles sprinted for an
impressive 151 yards against the Wolf
pack. The defense has given up 125
points in 10 games while the offense has
tallied 281 points, 50 of which came last
week against the Temple Owls. This is
the 41st consecutive year that Penn
State has had a winning season.
There is one factor that might affect
the outcome of next Friday's showdown--
national TV coverage by ABC. State is
25-12-1 on network television since Joe
Paterno became head coach in 1966. But
if Penn State can get psyched up for this
Pitt game and come out a winner, it's
altogether possible that they could win
the Fiesta Bowl and end up in both the
UPI and the AP top-five polls.
Linda On Ice
When was the last time you saw a
beautiful girl on ice skates?
Linda Fratianne, America's reigning
queen of figure skating, will make her
Philadelphia debut as a guest star with
the Ice' Follies and the Holiday on Ice
shows. The performances will be held in
the Spectrum Friday, Dec. 26 through
Sunday, Jan. 4.
The 20 year-old native Californian
gained national recognition with her
second place finish at the Winter Olym
pics in Lake Placid, New York earlier
this year.
Tickets for the performances are $6,
$7, $B, and $9, and are available at the
Spectrum box office or various Ticketron
outlets.
