page 12 By Bruce Burns It was a nightmarish sea son. There were many em barrassing scores, several frustrating events on and off the court, and very few wins. The final record shows the 1979-80 , PSU/ Capitol Basket ball Lions with a 3-22 mark, including the fact they drop ped their final fifteen games of the campaign. What the final record does not show is the tremendous courage and determination of these players and coaches, who lived through one of the most difficult basketball sea sons possible. Losers only in Spikers have punch by Jon Ference For the past seven weeks the Capitol Campus Girls' Volleyball team has been competing in the Middle town-Highspire Women's Volleyball league. Because this is not a varsity sport the girls are not competing against other colleges but against older established teams in the area. Although they could not get into a college league this season, they are hopeful of forming a varsity team in the fall of next year. The team is coached by a Capitol Campus student Rhonda Wolf and plays its games at a Junior High School Middle. awa Lines 944-9991 . WEDNESDAY- Campus League Nite Ball drilling services, Bags, Shoes and Accessories No losers on this team terms of wins and losses, this group of men are winners all the way when it comes to more important areas, such as class and character. Ineligibility, injury, and inconsistency plagued the Lions throughout the season. These factors, combined with an overwhelming number of road contests early on, made it impossible for PSU/ Capitol to get on track. The loss of Jack Wilson before the York game in. mid-January was the. final, fatal blow to the Lion's hopes for improvement upon last year's 5-18 slate. With the 6-4 junior out of the line-up, the Lions were without his 26 in Middletown. This season was mainly being used for practice and to gain experi ence for next year, but the girls have had some success against the established teams. When asked what she would like to say about the team, Konie Baer said "We would like to get sonie sup port from the students." Al though there are only three weeks left on the schedule, you can still come out and watch. The games start at 7 p.m. Wednesday nights at Feaser Junior High School in Middletown. With some sup port from fans and more girls who , like volleyball we may have varsity womens volley ball next year in our own gym. 46'1' points and 13 rebounds per contest, which was not to be overcome as the season moved on. Prospects for next season do look encouraging. Head Coach Dan Phillips and aide Ray White will welcome back Wilson, along with returnees Ron Kuzo, Bob Hassel, and Bernie Walko. Also figuring to improve PSU/ Capitol on the court are theicesults of the vigorous recruiting effort of Athletic Director Bud Smitley. Several top-notch players are expected to don the Blue and White next year. They carried themselves extremely well through a tough year, never giving in to the opposition. This never-say-die attitude was firmly in place when the Lions took the floor last Tues day evening for their season finale against host Spring Garden. Remembering all too well how the Bobcats ran up the score against them in an earlier meeting in Middle town, PSU/ Capitol broke out to an early lead, which Spring Women's volleyball team relaxing before recent game. The Bobcats pulled away from that point for another large margin of victory over PSU/ Capitol, but the Lions never stopped hustling until the final buzzer of the season sounded. And that is how this year's Lions should be re membered. Not just by their victories and defeats, but by their desire and determina tion; their courage, class, and character. If it really does not matter whether you win or lose, just how you played the game, then this season's PSU/ Capitol basketball team are national champions.
