If the theory is cor

quite well in the upcom

Lions lose Wilson
By Bruce Burns
ThePSU/ Capitol basket
ball program has lost the
services of star center Jack
Wilson for the remainder of
the 1979-80 season due to
academic ineligibility, it was
announced Tuesday.
Wilson, a 6-4 junior, had
been one of the NAIA's top
scorers and rebounders all
year, and was leading District
19 in scoring when the an
nouncement was made. Lions'
Head Coach Dan Phillips ac
knowledges that Wilson's loss
"has hurt us greatly,, but we
look forward to Jack's return
next season."
Phillips also commented
that, "We are sorry to see
lions nor for Red rematch
By Bruce Burns
Not very often will you
find that moments after a
basketball game in which the
difference of the scores is 27
points, the losers talk of look
ing forward to a rematch. Yet
that was the case following
PSU/ Capitol's 82-55 loss to
Laßoche last weekend in
Pittsburgh.
The Lions' opportunity to
gain revenge will come
Monday evening at the Multi-
Purpose Building when
Laßoche visits Middletown
for a 7:30 p.m. start. And, the
3-10 Lions are truly eager to
square off against the Red
Devils once more.
In Laßoche's victory
Saturday night, the red
Devils employed a full
court press that forced
the Lions into numerous
Jack leave us, but the athletic
department, players, and our
coaching staff all agree that
the academic standards of this
institution receive top prior
. ity at all times."
One note from this report
er: This decision should elimi
nate once and for all the
element on this campus which
would enjoy seeing athletics
discontinued. It was feared by
some that when PSU/ Capitol
attained membership in the
NAIA, the standards of the
college would be lowered in
order to upgrade the athletic
programs. This is the second
time in the course of this
basketball season in which a
player has been found ineligi
ble, and in both cases the
Athletic Department has act-
turnovers. Another factor
that worked against PSU
/Capitol was the officals'
inability to maintain con
trol of the contest. The
physical play of Laßoche
wore down the Lions,
and the brutal action
left two of them with
injuries that removed
them from the game.
Forward Bob Hassel
reinjured his left knee
in a collision with a
Laßoche player, and fel
low junior Bernie Walko
was taken from the
court on a stretcher
when it was feared he
suffered a concussion
after a terrible spill
under the PSU/Capitol
basket. Walko was later
released from a nearby
hospital, and both Lions
should be back in action
against the red Devils.

The Gymnasium is in use
during the following times:
Soccer practice: Every Friday
evening at 7:30 p.m.
Women's volleyball: For the
month of January, practice
will be held every Wednesday
from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m: and
every Thursday from 6 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m.
Varsity Basketball practice:
Every afternoon from 3:30
p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
ed properly and quickly in
dealing with the situations.
And in Jack's case, the action
is even more dramatic as the
player was bringing consider
able attention to PSU/ Capitol
from all across the
nation. Na one feels
more badly about the
development than Jack
Wilson, but he has vowed
to return next year to
continue his contributions to
the upward progress the
basketball program has
attained this year. And to
those who want sports
eliminated at PSU/Capitol,
you will just have to
come up with another
poor excuse.
Center Jack Wilson
continues to lead PSU/
Capitol in most statistical
areas, averaging over 26
points and 13 rebounds
per outing. Guards Ron
Kuzo and Bob Hudrick
have played well in re
cent games. and Coach
Dan Phillips is looking
for his two backcourt
men to continue their
'fine play.
Laßoche, which com
petes in the NAIA's Dis
trict 18, features a ba
lanced attack led by
guards Jeff Anderson
and Eric Urbanowicz.
The Red Devils have
good rebounding strength
in 6-7 Jeff London and
64 John Zamule. Laßoche
has registered several im
pressive wins this season,
including a 15-point vic
tory over NCAA small-col
lege power Carnegie-
Mellon.
