Suhey rushed for 225 yards and two touchdowns, including a 61-yard run for a score in the final quarter. Moore ran for 103 yards on the day, scoring State's first points on a one-yard plunge in the opening period. Both squads scored via the Soccer wrap-up The Capitol Campus soccer team claimed its first victory of the season on Octo ber 2 as they defeated PSU- Schuylkill Campus 1-0 at Schuylkill. Larry Venetsky scored the only goal on a penalty shot in a match dom inated by defense. On October 4 the Caps suffered a setback at the hands of liazletou Campus, 3-1. This is just a "last-ditch ef fort" to recruit a women's basketball team. Smitley has tried placing posters on the bulletin boards and putting little notices on the back page of the C.C. Reader. All in vain. Smitley, the Athletic Di rector at Capitol Campus, al most sounds like he's pleading when he says, "We'd really love to see a women's basket ball team" at Capitol. He's even gone so far as to locate a coach for the team-to-be. State Over Army field goal, with PSU's Herb Menhardt booting a 24-yard er, and Army's Dave Aucoin kicking a 44-yarder for the visiting Cadets. The contest was never really in doubt, but the outcome might have been closer had not Lion de fender Joel Coles made an outstanding tackle on the final play of the first half. Army split end Mike Fahnestock made a leaping catch at the State one-yard line, but Coles came up to meet the Cadet receiver, hitting him in midair by tony gladfelter October 9 to Eastern College by a 5-2 count. Sources close to the team state that while it is playing well defensively and getting a good number of shots on goal, the Caps just have not been able to score when they need ed it most. The remaining games of the schedule will all be played away. Conway is originally from Titusville, PA. She is a 1973 graduate of Slippery Rock State College, and was a health and physical education instructor at Har risburg's Bishop McDevitt High School from 1973 to 1976. Conway was also the var sity women's basketball and tennis coach at McDevitt. She even found time to coach hockey and track at Red Land High School. During her stay at Mc- Devitt the women's basket ball team became the league champs with a record of 12 and 0. Similarly, the women's team at Gettysburg went 14 and 3 for two seasons with Conway's assistance. "That was the winningest record they ever had there," Conway said. In reference to Capitol by bruce burns and driving him backwards as the first half came to a close. For the Lions, the victory improved their record to 3 -2, while the Cadets fell to a 2 - 2 - 1 mark for the season. State's next opponent is Syracuse, with the game set for Giants Stadium in New Jersey this Sat. afternoon. The Orange men are 4 - 2 for the year, the losses being to Ohio State and Temple. I've always had a desire to be the head coach on the college level," she said. Conway is quick to admit that, for now, she's "a coach without a team." But she hopes that situation will change after Monday's meeting. Smitley said that he hopes the team can play a 12- to 14- game schedule this year, made up of a mixture of two and four- year colleges. Next year, however, "I'd like to drop Junior College playing," he said. Smitley said he would con tact "all four-year schools comparable to Capitol Cam pus." Some of these would include: York College, Spring Garden College, Eastern Col lege, Lancaster Bible College, Lincoln University and Cop-, pin State College. pleted. Syracuse has an explosive offense, led by quarterback Bill Hurley, who will be the finest signal-caller the Nit tany Lions will face this sea son. Art Monk is used both as a running back and a wide receiver, so look for Hurley to try to get the ball to him as much as possible. The key to the Syracuse offense is soph omore Joe Morris, who last week led the country in rush ing. Morris is a small, quick back who will pose a big Phillips Becomes Head B-Ball Coach The new head basketball coach for the Men's varsity team is Mr. Dan Phillips. Phillips, who served as assist ant coach here for the last two years, replaces Jim Baker. He is a graduate of Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitts burg, Maryland. His experience includes a coach ing stint at Bishop McDevitt Bowling Gets The varsity bowling team opened its season on a rather sour note last weekend, losing to Bloomsburg and Villanove. Sources said that nervousness plagued the team as there is only one returning veteran, John Czajkowski.
