Middletown--Dr. Charles Cole, Professor of Engineering at Capitol Campus, and Project Director of Water Quality Management Curriculum De velopment, has recently been awarded a one-year continua tion award in support of his project, Curriculum Develop ment of a Bachelor of Engi neering Technology in Water Quality Management. This Federally-funded En vironmental Protection Agency grant was initially awarded to Dr. Cole in September 1977, and again in September 1978, for the development and sup port of a Water Quality Man agement Option at Capitol Campus. The program is on a Programs Designed For Security On Campus Recent events on campus make it necessary for the De partment of Safety and Police Services to call attention to the fact that the national trend of an increase in crime on campus has caught up with Capitol Campus. We believe that a combined effort on the part of each and every one of you, as concerned members of the Pennsylvania State University, Capitol Campus community and your Campus Police Depart ment, is the only way we can be successful in launching a coun terattack on this trend. Your Campus Police are committed to making our cam pus as free of crime as is possible. To accomplish this objective and to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of an on-campus crime, the Cam pus Police have initiated sev eral programs designed to re duce the possibility. We urge you to take advantage of these programs and to play an active part in the overall effort to reduce the opportunity for crime on our campus. STUDENT PATROL - The Student Patrol is an organiza tion providing a support service to the Campus Police through interaction and direct liaison with the student body, faculty, staff, and visitors, to our cam pus. Although not sworn police officers, through their roving patrols and constant radio con tact with the Campus Police, the Student Patrol does pro vide additional "eyes and ears" to enhance the coverage of the campus. HOME SECURITY SURVEY - At your request, a member of the Department of Safety and Police Services will make an appointment with you to survey your residence and sug gest to you methods that you might use to increase basic security and protection of your personal property while here on campus. HOUSE CHECKS - A minute Professor Recieves Award two-course track--one oriented toward design and operation of water and water waste plants, and the other emphasizing the monitoring, surveillance and planning, and implementation of water quality. Dr. Cole related that there are, at present, 36 students in the two-track program, with enrollment about equally divid ed. "We at Capitol Campus provide professional objective training in engineering tech nology, and are impressed with the quality of students in both programs," he said. According to Dr. Cole, "our graduates skilled in the design and operation of water and waste water plants are very of your time to request a house check while you are away froth campus for a prolonged period of time will result in a Campus Police officer responding to your residence (Meade Heights and University Apts.) and per forming a perimeter check of that residence on each patrol during your absence. OPERATION IDENTIFICA TION - This is a program wherein your Campus Police Department in conjunction with the Governor's Justice Commission and the Federal L.E.A.A. program have com bined efforts and facilities to provide you with a means of identifying your readily trans portable valuables. You may borrow from your resident assistant or from the Campus Police Department, an electric scriber or engraver and en grave your state driver's li cense number on each and every item of value in your possession. The fact that you have done this, and that you make that fact known by dis playing a window sticker we will provide, reduces the value of those items in the market for stolen goods. It further makes possible your ability to posi tively identify these items and to reclaim them if they are recovered by a police depart ment or anyone else. You should mark each item in a conspicuous spot, and then also mark it again in a hidden or concealed spot if at all possible. Remember, these scribers or engravers are made available to your through your resident assistant both in Meade Heights and the dorms, plus at the Campus Police Headquar ters. The above described pro grams have been developed as parts of our ongoing program to assist you in making your cam pus a safer place for you to reside and pursue your educa tion. We strongly encourage much in demand today. And those persons knowledgeable in areas of monitoring and imple menting water quality also are needed now, with the need for them continuing to grow in the future, as we attempt to en force water quality standards being imposed by the Pennsyl vania Department of Environ mental Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency," Dr. Cole added. "Any agencies, consulting firms, or other organizations requiring skilled water quality management graduates are en couraged to contact the Place ment Office here at Capitol Campus," he continued. Interested students desir- each and every one of you to participate in the afore mentioned services and pro- grams If you have any questions or are in need of any information in an area in which we may be of assistance, please do not hesitate to call us at 787-7936. The most sig nificant among these occurred about three years ago when we discontinued the use of contract security gaurds and hired of ficers directly as members of the staff of the campus. These officers all had the training required to be sworn police officers in , the, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As we have reviewed the DR. GARY A. Thus, the Depart ment of Safety and Police Ser vices now has been renamed as the Department of Safety and Police Services. This action does not change the respon sibilities of the Department, rather it more accurately iden tifies the Department.
