CAPITOL CAMPUS READER Vol. 7, No. 19 Capitol Campus Penn State Univers C.C. Students Receive Scholarship Middletown--Dr. Robert E. McDermott, Provost of Penn State-- Capitol Campus, announces that four students have received Eastman Kodak Undergraduate Scholarships for Spring Term 1978. The school has been awarded the money in cooperation with Kodak's 1977 Educational Aid Program. This program was established to acknow ledge the contributions made by college graduates to the company's success. Grants are presented to the graduate's alma mater for each undergraduate or graduate year completed by the students who join Kodak within five years of their graduation. The grant to Capitol Campus is on behalf of Gregory A. Garth and Nicholas Difeo. Garth graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Technology in electrical design engineering technolo gy- The high number of qualified Future Business Leaders Of America What is FBLA-PBL? FBLA-PBL stands for Future Business Leaders of America--Phi Beta Lambda, Inc., which is a non-profit, vocational, educational association for students who are interested in preparing for careers in business. It is composed of two divisions--FBLA at the high school and PBL at the post-secondary and college levels. At the present time, there are over 165,000 members in over 8,000 chapters across the country, according to Bryan D. Krause, State President of the college division of Phi Beta Lambda. What is the purpose of the - association? The purpose of the organization, explained Krause, is to help students learn first hand, about the business community as they develop vocational competencies that will enable them to successfully pursue careers in busi ness. How is this done? This is done in various ways. At the local level, the members learn how to lead and participate in group discussions, preside at meetings and conferences, work effectively within committees and, perhaps, most important, engage in practical prob lem-solving and decision-making. Since competition is recognized as a major part of our Free Enterprise System, FBLA-PBL sponsors state and national leadership conferences that begins students made the determination of recipients most difficult. In choosing the recipients, the Capitol Campus Committee on Academic and Athletic Standards, Awards and Scholarships took into consideration merit as well as faculty support and recommendations. The recipients are: Emil Yannes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil J. Yannes, 506 Putnam Street, West Hazleton, majoring in the Mechanical Design Engineering Technology Program; Richard Hockenberry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Quig Hockenberry, R.D. 1, East Berlin, majoring in the Electrical Design Engineering Technology Pro gram; Michael L. Bridge of 106 Kloss Drive, Lancaster, majoring in the Mechanical Design Engineering Technology Program; and Francis C. Bekampis, son of Mr: and 11E&Wimisis Bekampis, 36 West Germania Street, Ashley, who is majoring in the Electrical Design Engineering Technology Program. with competition at the local level, Krause added. Is FBLA-PBL involved with any projects? Yes, FBLA-PBL members are involved with projects including professional, civic, service, career development and social awareness. Two of our most rewarding projects were: raising over $BOO,OOO for the March of Dimes two years ago, and presently we are in the second year of Project Awareness: A project devel oping the awareness of the American Free Enterprise System, Krause said. How does Project Awareness work? It is based very simply on the idea of two-way communication. The association thinks that creating a two-way relationship between business and students is a natural because they both are like-mined, believe in business and the free enterprise system and want to know more about it, Krause stated. The primary goal is to create more interest in and a greater understanding of the American Free Enterprise System. What has been business reaction? The cooperation between business and the membership has been very purely overwhelming, explained Krause. On the national level, a number of corporations donating programmatic and financial support. A few examples include: Amoco has donated awards for outstanding projects; Phillips Petroleum has MrIM15:11 fl "on ' yung on page 3. donated materials for Project Awareness kits. Sears Roebuck and Company has donated teaching materials for advisors; Coca-Cola Company, Inc. has contributed funds to be used as needed. Many associations are assisting FBLA-PBL-The National Federation of Independent Business has underwritten the production costs of an audiovisual slide presentation, a new brochure aimed at business and industry and several awards presented at the National Leadership Conference. The American Council of Life Insurance has also contributed cash awards. Around the Central Pa. Area, companies like White Advertising Metro, Pantry Pride Stores, McDonalds, CCNB N.A., and Central Pa. Savings have underwritten costs of Project Awareness. In addition, Krause has formed a new state advisory board which will help guide the state chapter and promote the association on a day-to-day basis. New members include: Edward R. Book, president and chairman of HERCO; Tom Coolidge, Assistant Director, Community Service Department, The Patriot News; William Griffith, Executive Vice-President of Central Pa. Savings; Jay Miller, president of Jays Markets, Inc.; and N.G. Vandling, president of Specialty Ladyfingers Inc. When will the state leadership conference be held? The FBLA SLC will be held at the Host Farm in Lancaster on April 30, nali4l4laW orean dancer and actor performs on campus. See story May 1 and 2; while the PBL State Leadership Conference will be held April 21-23 at the Danville Sheraton. We are expecting both conferences to be at maximum attendance levels and the new State Advisory Board will meet for the first time in Danville, Krause added. Bryan D. Krause has received his associate of arts degree from Harrisburg Area Community College and is completing his Bachelor of Business Administration at Penn State Capitol Campus. In addition, to attending Penn State full-time and serving as State President of Phi Beta Lambda, he is also employed part-time by Pantry Pride as man-in-charge of an area store.
