Prof. Rescues Town Middletown--Dr. Francis Ferguson, professor of envi ronmental design at Penn State Capitol Campus, has rescued the town of Nelson from destruction for the sake of progress. The Cowanesque Valley in Tioga County is the perfect spot for a water retention basin to help alleviate heavy damage from flooding in upstate Pennsylvania and New York. The Army Corps of Engineers is constructing the basin as part of a $97 million dollar federal flood control project. This "perfect spot" also happens to be the location of the township of Nelson. Originally, Nelson was to be obliterated and its residents relocated. In response, the residents fought and won a battle to have Nelson relocated as a community. That's where Dr. Ferguson comes in. Along with his students and the faculty of the Capitol Campus graduate pro gram in urban and regional planning, he planned the relocation and designed a "new" Nelson. Dr. Ferguson was awarded the contract in open interna tional competition. He received a grant of $105,000 from the Army Corps of Engineers in February, 1977. Within five months Ferguson and his staff provided the completed plans. The whole project is unique because 1) it is the first American town to be designed by a University, 2) it is Coach Graham May sent the pins toppling with a 204, 209, and 237. He had series of 479, 541, and 626 for a 182 average. In one game the team finished with 1002 total pins. Each man averaged 200. On the last day of the tournament the team Averaged 190. This brought them from eighth place to their final fifth place finish. The team is bowling very well and hopes to participate in the Dr. Pepper Classic at designed to accomodate solar collectors for solar energy and 3) it was designed and under construction in record time. Dr. Ferguson is an interna tionally renowned architect, planner and professor. He was educated at Notre Dame, Harvard, and Columbia Universities and has degrees in architecture and urban plan ning, working in these fields in New York and • Paris before coming to the Capitol Campus. He is a licensed architect in N.Y. and Pa. and has been a consultant to several New York V )) . 35RfiLe pit.t‘ esaa *ace eact4 ?'ee fadt d.te qaace? Your time is valuable.
