Reader was honored with eight awards from the Press Association of Com monwealth Campuses. They received six publication and two individual awards. The Reader came in second as the best overall Commonwealth Campus newspaper. The Altoona Collegian received first place. The Reader received honorable mention for its advertising, photography, editorial page, and also its news and sports coverage. Gerry Achenbach, asso ciate editor and a 12th term multi-media journalism ma jor, received both individual awards. Her article, “Prof Fights Retirement” in the Nov. 20th issue captured the first place award for news article writing. She also received a second-place award in edi torial writing for her “The C.C. Reader Stands Inde pendent” in the Feb. 19th issue. The Press Association is an organization of former Commonwealth Campus newspaper staff members now at University Park that provides training to current Commonwealth Campus newspaper staffs. This year's judging of journalistic excellence was done by Gerry Hamilton, general manager of the Press Association and a copy editor at the York Dispatch; Thomas Berner, a journalism professor at University Park; and William Campbell, di rector of public information at University Park and advisor to the Press Associ ation.
