act like that.” Sue has never
been blamed for influencing
my actions. After all,
doesn’t a husband always
tell his wife what to do?
“After all men have a better
mind for these things don’t
they?”
Sue and I do talk about
many items of campus
concern, but we also try to
keep out of each others
- bailiwick. We are both
individuals, and we want to
keep and we jealously guard
owrown personalities. It’s a
far cry from the traditional
relationship. But then our
personalities aren’t stereo
typical. I'm the emotional
one and she has the cool,
even icy (when provoked),
analytic mind. At home I
design the curtains and she
fixes the tractor.
If a number of our
collegues, faculty and ad

The plumber or the tractor
repairman always wants to
explain the niceties of
French drains and gasoline
filters to me. They were
bemused when I referred
them to Sue--and now they
gravitate to her if not
instinctively, gracefully.
Our Lancaster county
neighbors also have trouble
with our relationship. A man
who owns a farm next to our
property wants to trade
some land with us“let’s talk,
among ouselves” he re
marked “women don’t under

meanwhile, Sue calculated
the square footage of the
land in question and

admit, although not in
words, that “man to man” is
not necessarily the best way
to solve problems with the

People are often non

and ask for “Dr. Richman”
and we answer “which one?”
Usually they want me, not
“Mrs. Richman.”
Accepting women with
titles requires adaptation.
Knowing how to treat
husbands of professional
women also leads to
awkward situations. How do
you treat a shadow?
Learned societies like
ordinary citizens often
stumble when they try to
adjust to the new situations.
Many organizations no

they have “Spouses Pro

Right? Well, how come they
all seem to feature fashion
shows?
