Powerless
Concert

The TOWER OF POWER
and SKY KING show at
Franklin and Marshall Col
lege on Saturday, Nov. Bth,
was billed as “A soul
show-good and funky.”
One thing, however, was
missing-TOWER OF
POWER.
The reason? According
to the concert promoter,
TOWER’S saxman, Lenny
Pickett who does all the wild
dancing for the group,
danced right off the stage
in a previous concert.
As a result a couple of east
coast engagements were
pulled from the group’s
schedule.
Some people said the
announcement could have
been handled better. But, up
until the last minute
decisions concerning the
release of the announcement
were being made. As late as
Friday, Nov. 7th, there was
hope the group would show
at the last minute.
Because TOWER OF
POWER did not show, the
promoters decided not to
“rip off” anybody attending
the concert and a full refund
was offered.
Many people did want
their money back and the
remaining audience was not
large.
Yet, those who left
missed a fantastically
successful show with
Columbia recording artists
SKY KlNG—Chris Brubeck’s
group, THIRD STREAM-a
local group, and CROWN
HEIGHTS AFFAIR-a group
who records for Delight
records and is getting ready
to break nationally.
The response of those
who stayed was close to
adulation. Some people
were dancing in the aisles,
and others were swaying
their shoulders uncontrol
lably ,to the powerful music.
The jazzy dance routines
of CROWN HEIGHTS
AFFAIR and SKY KING’S
harmonica player were alone
almost worth the price of
admission. Not only could
this man stretch a harmonica
between his fingers, but also
he careened across the stage
to the steady beat of the
music.

If you ever get the chance, go to see the Preservation Hall
Jazz Band. But don’t make the mistake this reporter did.
The purest pleasure and excitement of this “old style”
New Orleans jazz band can only be experienced on their own
turf. So pack your bags and make the twelve hundred mile
trip to New Orleans. Stay away from the stuffy ornateness of
a theatre where the urge to boogi§ is stifled.
Do it fast, though, for they may not be around much
longer. With the exception of the drummer, all of the
members of the band looked to be a decade past 65.
in spite of their advanced years, they were livelier than a
much younger audience. In fact, they seemed to be having a
much better time if only due to the fact that we were
restrained by our plushy seats and lack of elbow room.
Their selections ranged from the smooth and mellow, as
in “Basin Street Blues", to the swinging sounds of “In The
Mood”. The icing on the cake was the predictable but
exciting, “When The Saints Go Marching In”.
Kid Thompson, the wizened leader of the band added his
own special touch to the concert at one time by donning a
top hat for a gravelly-voiced “skat song” and at another time,
wearing a sun bonnet during a trumpet-playing stroll
through the audience.
The enthusiasm and style they lent to each song in their
program helped to lesson the importance of an occasional
sour note. They may not be able to perform some of their
best ‘licks” anymore, but they are one of a kind. And
sometimes being unique is reason enough for being.
In a way, the band is like a pair of old slippers. They are a
little worn out and scruffy around the edges but they’ve given
you more enjoyment in their later years than when they were
new. And you’d certainly hate to lose them.

Congratulations to all the new members!
Also, congratulations to Jane from public information and
Doris from Student Affairs for being voted in as honorary
fraternity members. Those who drank, drank well, but no
one beat the record of 2.3 seconds by Bob (fish) Monath
from last year! We all drank to the tune of around $lOO that
Tuesday night.
I was really frosted during a rece it trip to University Park
for All U-day. It seems that even with Capitol’s
representation of around 200 people there at Happy Valley,
the head cheerleader forgot to call out Capitol Campus
during the recognition of Commonwealth Campuses. I got
the feeling that they would just rather forget that we exist.
Well, beans! They should recall that the XGI softball team
from Capitol won the all-state championship last year by
beating the University Park teams along the way!
Have a good Thanksgiving and Christmas and see you
next year! By Jom Jensen XGI Reporter

Amino Acids
Dr. Joseph Pedulla,
assistant professor of phys
ics has been awarded a
research contribution of
$1,500 by Hershey Foods
Corporation.
Pedulla plans to use this
support for his research of
electronic and surface pro
perties of amino acids. He
says the investigation will
help to gain a fundamental
understanding of the roles
proteins and enzymes play in
biological processes and
systems.
His long range plan is to
set a laboratory for the
continuing research of these
topics that would also be a
source of expertise to local
industries in the field of
physics.
Pedulla is a resident of
Elizabethtown and has
taught physics and mathe
matics at Capitol since 1971.
