Oct. 9, 1975 Cultural Committee Sets Programs For Year By Linda Kerstetter The Cultural Committee under the direction of Roberta McLeod, coordinator of student activities, has planned a series of programs for this school year which should cover most interests of students, faculty, staff and the community. The programs will be divided into several categories. The first category is the Bicentennial Series which will include performances and lecturers who will present programs giving a historical overview of America from 1776-1976. The first performance in this series was “Americana”- history of America in folk songs with nationally acclaimed folk singer George Britton, who was in costume of the Revolutionary Period. This performance was on Tuesday and set design was provided by one of our own students, Harry Nugent. The first presentation in the Health Series was presented on Wednesday. The guest' lecturer was Dr. David R. Halbert, assistant professor, department of obstetrics and gynecology at Hershey Medical Center. Another film/lecture series is'scheduled for Tuesday, October 14th at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium. The first program in this series, funded by the General Motors Corporation, is entitled “General Motors and Minorities.” The guest lecturer is Mr. Alfred H. McMullen, assistant regional manager, General Motors Public Relations. He will tell of his company’s involvement with equal employ ment opportunity in its daily business and community activities. Middletown Hunter’s & Angler’s Club ENTERTAINMENT BY W orld Premiere University Park, Pa.-Sarah Caldwell, founder and artis tic director of the Opera Company of Boston, has been named conductor for the world premiere presen tation of Pulitzer Prize winning composer John La Montaine’s “Be Glad Then America,” a special event celebrating the Nation’s Bicentennial at The Penn sylvania State University. The program will feature the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, University Choirs and guest soloists. Commissioned by the Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies at the University., the. musical and dramatic entertainment for ❖ “BUSH” orchestra and chorus centers on events leading up to the American Revolution. Premiere performances are planned for Feb. 6,7, and 8, 1976 in the 2600-seat University Auditorium at the University Park campus of Penn State. Producting the event is the College of Arts and Architecture. Tickets for the Feb. 6 and 8 performances of “Be Glad Then America” will be distributed by the University Artists Series as part of the Bicentennial Performing Arts in America Series. The Feb. 7 performance is an event in the Music Series subscription series. Bell of Pennsylvania will also sponsor a program. This will be a film/lecture called “Common Sense, Common Courtesy.” Helpful hints on good telephone manners will be illustrated with animated slides and tape . recorded voices. Art Exhibit, Gallery Lounge Art exhibits are another item on Capitol’s Painter/Sculptor cultural agenda. The first exhibit opened October Ist and will run through October 10th. The artist, Othmar Carli, is currently teaching Art 415 here at Capitol.- The next art exhibit is scheduled for October 13th through October 31st. It is the Bicentennial Series of Benny Andrews, an internationally acclaimed black artist from New York. Andrews will be on campus for a film/lecture and informal reception on Monday, October 13th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The lecture and reception will be held in the Gallery Lounge.
