One Step Beyond
Women's Liberation
Crack READER columnist Jimmy Olson is tracking down a lead for his
next column, featured exclusively in the C.C. READER. With Jimmy on the
go, Sy Hersh and the Eastern liberal press-be forewarned... Muckraking is
alive and well in the hearts and minds of the nation's smaller tabloids.
Hello sports fans. Jimmy here once again mukraking my way
into your hearts. Jimmy has a few important questions to ask
about the women's liberation movement. I'm not being negative to
any cause by writing this article, because I am emphatically for
women's Lib. But, in any movement there is always room for
improvement. So, here are my suggestions to all women on how to
ascend one step beyond liberation.
As you all know, my ex-boss, Superman, was the epitome of
male chauvinists of the century. Poor Lois Lane just stood by and
took all the crap he gave her. So, I feel that I have some real, first
hand insights into the matter. Once the equal rights amendment is
passed and legally exercised, women across this vast country will
be called upon to take that "one step beyond". This step, is
growing out of the secure, convenient status that most women now
maintain. I challenge women to totally assert themselves by
becoming a total human being! No longer will laws and social
stigmas dictate women's relationship with men. No longer will
women be able to sit back and hide behind the veil of being
discriminated against. In other words, it's up to you women to
make the first step.
Stop forcing men to be the dominate sex. Stop playing roles. If
two people meet, and are in someway attracted to each other, why
should it be the man who must ask the woman out? There Is no
excuse for the woman not to exhibit her attraction to that man by
asking him out. I am tired of having to act as the asker. Many
women feel that men will be turned off if the one who asks the men
out. So, true! But, there are plenty (or at least some) men who can
easily handle that situation. That's one hell of a challenge to ac
cept.
What about sex? Generally, why must it be the man who
initiates the vibrations leading up to a sexual relationship?
Women have sex drives just like men, so why not express them?
Don't feed me that moral bit either. Again, many women feel that
men would believe themselves to be inadequate if women are the
sexual aggressors. If the man has his "head together", there's no
reason for a break down of a fantastic sexual relationship. In fact,
Jimmy feels that equal aggression and expression of sexual
feelings is quite stimulating. Ever hear of equal time? Well, here it
is.
What about financial matters? Say if some fantastic woman
wanted to take me out to dinner, would I feel Insulted if she paid
the check? Absolutely not! My pride is not over-bearing enough to
not accept the warm friendship of a friend. The money makes no
difference. In no way is Jimmy Olson cheap. It's just the principle
(of the game) of the man asking a woman out to dinner or other
entertainment, and automatically paying the expenses. Many
women students are just as poor as their male coharts, so why not
be thoughtful and share. Have you women forgotten about
sharing? Come out behind the games, and let me see your face.
I could ramble on and on with examples. But for your sake, I
won't. I have made my point about equal responsibility in
relationships, whether they be emotional or sexual. If women are
to be truly free to express themselves as real, loving human
beings, they must drop the old social roles of being the passive
partners. What about men? I haven't forgotten about them. You
all say that there are too few man who can handle it? Perhaps you
women are absolutely right!
I can only speak for myself, and not for anyone else
The only reason why I, Jimmy Olson - the world's most renown
combater of mediocrity, have presented this challenge to women,
is simply because I do most sincerely love all of you.
Jimmy Olson just wants something beautiful.
