This first convocation in the history of Penn State- Capitol Campus will be held Tuesday October 8, 1974 at 11:00 a.m. in front of the school's main building in Middletown. The convocation will include a robed procession adding a touch of tradition to the academic program. Mr. Sidey who writes the Time magazine column "The Presidency," has regularly reported on the Johnson and Nixon administrations, and now covers the Ford White House for Time. In 1960 he Third Stone Valley Workshop Held to prepare the new RA's for their duties. The main topics of discussion were improved cooperation between the various organizations and ways to increase students' involvement in them. Along with a plethora of meetings and leadership orientations, the group was visited by several officials from the University Park campus. These included Charlene Harrison, who conducted special sessions on group dynamics, and Mr. Ralph DeShong, vice-president for Student Affairs at University Park. On Sunday, speakers were Provost Mc- Dermott, Dr. Wolf (Dean of Faculty), and Administrative Officer for C.C., Mr. Dessler, all from Capitol Campus. traveled on the campaign trail with John Kennedy and was in Dallas in 1963 when Kennedy was assassinated. Sidey, a fourth generation journalist, has written a book, "John F. Kennedy, President: A Reporter's Inside Story." He has also written a book on Kennedy's successor, entitled, "A Very Personal Presidency: Lyndon B. Johnson in the White House." A native of lowa, Sidey graduated from lowa State and worked as a journalist in the mid-west before joining Life magazine in New York. After two years he moved to Washington, D.C. as Time's White House correspondent. In 1969, he became Time-Life Bureau Chief. Other activities included the SGA budget hearings and entertainment by the Buffalo Chipkickers, a local bluegrass group, at a squaredance keggar on Saturday night. The workshop was headed by Student Affairs Director Jerry South and the Coordinator of Student Affairs, Agnes Green. Other faculty and staff helping out were: Bud Smitley, Coordinator of Athletics; Marion Krieger, Director of the Counseling Center; Iris Prager, Chairperson-Student Affairs Committee; Pat Murphy, Residence Living Coordinator; and Terry Turnbaugh, Residence Living Coordinator. The affair could be termed a tentative success. Its ultimate success depends upon the average student-at-large and whether he-she gives the organizations a chance to show their stuff. Flood Trailers Removed by Doug Gibboney Two years after the flood that made them necessary and one year after the expiration of their lease, the trailers have been removed from Capitol Campus. University officials offered the land between the Main Building and the Placement office for use as a temporary flood victim trailer court following the June 1972 disaster. Problems arose last fall when federal, state and county authorities denied any responsibility for removing vacant units. The issue remained at a stalemate until early this summer. The state agreed to accept the task and promised all the homes would be relocated to area trailer courts by October 1, a deadline that was beaten by several weeks. ~ : .! - r ,,... 1, , , . * t -, ' I .e.fro, i' , ,, :;,..1 , 14 1 4 44 c, .., - , - _ . In cluded in the discussions were sessions on group dynamics, styles of leadership, and the role of Capitol Campus as it relates to University Park. The workshop enabled the various student leaders to become better acquainted with each other and with the problems of the individual organizations. It provided the opportunity for the student leaders to work together to combat common and in dividual problems. Although the primary purpose of the workshop was to discuss the common organizational problems, there were periods of recreation. The highlight was an old fashioned barn dance featuring music by the Buffalo Chip-Kickers and fancy footwork by Allen Kerchner.
