This victory for Capitol ended 3 years of a winless season for the baseball team. BARRY DEACON made the victory possible as he drove home NICK CHERICH for the winning run. BARRY BAUER, Co-captain, started the scoring of the game leading off with a double; scored on heads-up base running, scoring from second base on a pass ball. DARRYLE SMITH, centerfielder, scored Capitol’s second run on a wild pitch. “CHUCH” DETTREY complimented Capitol’s offense with a double, single and one run scored. Defensively, AL HOWE caught a fine game behind the pitching of DEN HLAVATY who struck out 10 batters. The overwhelming bench enthusiasm displayed by the Capitol Campus baseball team was a big contributing factor to this success. The baseball team is coached by DR. HUGH SPALL. ** * * Equipment Check-Out The Recreation/Athletic Building has various items available for your check-out and use. The air was cold, the ground wet, our team as yet untested, and our opponent, at the conclusion of their season, was in good shape. The game-a rerun of last Fall’s match right down to the score - 7:6. Only this time, N.E. was the victor and not Capitol. Capitol was out in front early in the game. Dennis Doerr scored twice on passes from John Harris and Dan Fichtner. Each time, N.E. came from behind and brought the game to a 2:2 score by half time. The lead changed hands twice during the second half. Capitol came from behind three times to even the score at 5:5. Then Capitol moved out ahead 6:5 when John scored on a pass from Dennis with 10 minutes remaining. Both teams pressed hard in the closing minutes and N.E. managed 2 more goals in rapid succession to pull the game out of the fire. Coach Trunk felt the Team strong for their first game against a team that was ending its season. Rain has kept the team from scrimmaging on the athletic field. There are some new players being broken in and some experimentation with positions going on. “I feel we have the better team, but it won’t show until we get a few scrimmages in,” said the coach. The next game is this Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at home against a strong Messiah Varsity team. It will be a top game.
