Shutout
Harrisburg Italians
By Mike Nonnemacher
On Sunday, November 11,
Capitol’s soccer team ended its
fall season with a 2-0 victory
over the Harrisburg Italian
Soccer Club. The team was
pitted against a Central Penn
League team; Coach Trunk felt
that the team was, “ripe to step
beyond the bounds of
Commonwealth Campus
competition.” The coach had
also been seeking a shutout
which was delayed primarily due
to injuries. It was the first
shutout for the Capitol booters
and was a great way to end the
season!
The team started with ten
players as Harold Meyers ran
from the dressing room directly
on to the field into his right
wing position. Ennio Trent
proved to be a vital link in
communication with an
Italian-only-speaking referre -
there is still a question on some
of the words exchanged.
Dennis Doerr was out the
first half due to an injury to his
right foot from the last game.
After seeing John Harris shoot a
penalty shot into the goalie’s
hand in the first half, Dennis
decided to suit up for the second
half. Goalie Armand Magnelli
saved two penalty direct kicks
and a few breakaways providing
a major input to the shutout.
At halftime the score was
0-0. Capitol pushed hard the
second half. Harold Meyers
booted a neat left corner kick.
There was a mad scramble in
front of the goal with John
Harris shooting the ball off one
of their men into the goal. Some
time later Dennis Doerr picked
up a forward pass and torpedoed
it into the nets in his usual style
making it 2-0 for Capitol. The
score held while our reserves
carried the game to a close.
Continuing the jinx of one freak
accident per game, Randy Hess
twisted his knee and sat out the
rest of the game.
After the game, the team
gathered at coach Trunk’s house
where they had a season’s end
party. The coach showed them a
film that he had directed on the
selection of the 1968 U.S.
Olympic and Pan American
Soccer Team. The team is
eagerly looking forward to the
spring term when a new season
will begin.
The team’s line-up for
Sunday’s game was:
Goal-Armand Magnelli, (Tom
Peterman), Fullbacks - Ken
Albert, Pat Byrne, (Michael
Nonnemacher), Halfbacks
Doug Weirich, Larry
Lingenfelter, Ennio Trent,
(Andy Koval, Bill Davies),
Forwards - Randy Hess, John
Harris, Barry Deacon, Dan
Fitchner, Harold Meyers, (A 1
Burlikowski, Bob Lawler, Dennis
Doerr).
