In ancient years, in realms so far away You whispered truths—realities to share. When absence settled in I walked the line You oh, so vaguely hinted at before. The evolution melted through my core And brought me to the readiness of time. It describes aspects of the University's educational program including the number of courses taught, the number of full- and part-time faculty, and undergraduate and graduate enrollments. An analysis of how each faculty member utilized his workweek was also prepared. The average full-time member paid from the University's resident instruction budget spent an average of 39.4 hours per week on instructional activities and an estimated 11.2 hours per week in `. ,other. University assignments ciurh 'last rall's ten-week term. Actual measurements showed that Penn State's faculty spent 12.3 hours weekly in the classroom, but that these hours are only the tip of the iceberg in terms of their total workloads. In addition to their classroom duties, the average faculty member spent an additional 27.1 hours each week in instructional supporting activities. These included preparing lectures, tests and reading lists, reviewing papers, grading examinations, advising students, and meeting with them individually for conferences. B 1 . 1 AUDIO ASSOCI' Faculty hard hours In addition to instructional responsibilities, faculty put in an additional 11.2 hours in research, public service, and administrative or committee activities, boosting their total average workweek to the 50.6 hour figure. analysis Penn State collected data for the survey at each of its 22 campuses, exclusive of the Milton S. Hershey Meidcal Center. Complete figures were available from Summer and Fall Terms, 1972, while those for Winter and Spring, 1973, were based on projections. The survey also reported the composite weekly workload of all full-tirrie faculty, including those whose salaries were paid fully or in part from budget areas other than resident insturction. To insure the accuracy of the survey data, the University conducted three checks. First, results were compared with those from other institutionsl'Studies of faculty at comparable universities across the country show a. similar workweek, the survey noted. For a University with a graduate instruction program and a long-standing mission of research, the workload figures also suggest that Penn State's faculty devotes more time to teaching than do those at many other schools. Secondly, after .each faculty member had completed the survey form, it was reviewed by the appropriate department head, college dean, and/or campus director. 1.1.111.1.1.111A..61.1111.11... 7 J , INC Page 3
