They may as well have stayed home. It was one of those games in which absolutely nothing went right. The final score read Shippensburg 93, Capitol 62. It was obvious almost from the start that the Lions just didn't have it. Jimmy Merlano's basket at the 2:06 mark gave the Lions a 4-2 lead. From there, they looked like they were auditioning for the lead role in Jimmy Breslin's "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight." That was the last lead Capitol saw. Although they held it close through the first 9:36 with a 1-3-1 zone, Coach Al Williams switched into a man-to-man defense at that time. The Raiders ripped off ten straight points in 7:40 to open a 30-18 lead. From then on, the game was a complete route. Shippensburg carried a 46-27 lead into the locker at halftime, and never once had to look back. Due to the artificial tartan court at Shippensburg, Capitol sustained it's first serious injuries of the season. (Previously, Armond Magnelli's twisted ankle was the only instance which saw a Lion miss a game due to an injury). In the first half, Rick Schropp strained the ligaments in his left knee; Tommy Ogden also strained ligaments in his right ankle midway through the second half. The artificial surface just doesn't allow a player's foot to slide when it comes down hard. When you're not used to it, it can be a killer. There was one bright spot in this disaster of a finale. That was the fine play of Rich Kopko, who figures to play a key role on next year's team. Kopko scored nine, all in the second half, played a solid defense, and gave some additional hope for next year. So ends another chapter in Capitol Campus basketball. The team finished with a 5-7 record, and overall, performed well. Next year, with a player or two to round out the frontcourt personnel, the Lions should improve on that mark. Kurowsky CUP FEVER AT CAPITOL There is a fever going around Philadelphia these days. It is especially catchy if you spend a lot of time tuned to Channel 29 or watching the Flyers at Broad & Patterson while at home. This fever was only contacted by Canadians but now many Americans are getting this fever. It's the Stanley Cup fever. This year the Broad Street Bullies (aka The Mad Squad) are making a serious threat at the cup. The Flyers are presently in second place in the West, 7 points out of first. Of the last 19 games the Flyers have lost only 3. Many people say it may be leadership of Bobby Clarke or the maturity of Rick McKleish that helped turn the Flyers around. But it is the view of this reporter (a little Howard Cosell) that the change this year came because of the pure physical power the Flyers now possess. In earlier years teams would get physical with the Flyers and the Flyers would play dead. This year is different, the Broad Street Bullies are hitting people more often and harder than any other team in hockey. Now teams are beginning to think ** * * by Randall Blimline first before wanting to get physical with the Flyers. The fever has hit me, and I know its hit a few Capitol students. You can tell those effected by the fever because everytime they see a red light they stand up and cheer.
