A tentative proposal appeared in last week's Capitolist. Following is the revised statement issued by a task force formed by Provost Robert E. McDermott: PATeili go m'a 0 KID iiii CI) Be it resolved that the Faculty Organization of The Capitol Campus endorses the cooperation with the Harrisburg Area Community College for the purpose of providing more effective and efficient use of our eudcational resources. We, the executive officers of the Harrisburg Area Community College and the Capitol Campus of The Pennsylvania State University affirm and announce the effective cooperation of our two institutions for the purpose of providing more effective Senate Changes Grading by ROBERT W. BONAKER The University Senate has recently changed several procedures relating to deferred grades, final examinations, and the repetition of courses, with all of the changes being implemented in the coming spring term. Basic rule "M-5" concerned deferred grades and possible extensions, stating that they may be authorized only by the program head upon recommendation of the individual faculty member. The Senate stated it is the responsibility of students to origin ally request deferred grades and to complete work within six weeks of the succeeding term in order to gain an actual grade. Deferred grades are arbitrarily granted to students who, for reasons "beyond their control," do not complete course work in the regularly alloted time. The major change in the rule is summarized in the following passage: "The period during which a grade may be deferred shall not, without further approval of the program head, extend beyond the end of the sixth week of the next term in which a student is enrolled. A deferred grade which is not changed to a passing grade by the instructor prior to the end of this period shall automatically become an 'F'." - 100% Beef Hamburger *l/4 lb *Crisp Pickles *Mustard, Ketchup and Onions *Served on a lightly Toasted Sesame seed But, THE CAPITO LIST Faculty Expected to ** * * i!?? Approve HACC Proposal and efficient use of our educational resources. Joint faculty and administrative committees of our two institutions will be created to implement this policy 'in areas of admissions, curriculum planning, dual enrollment, exchange of students and faculty, as well as the JOINT UTILIZATION OF FACUILTIES AND other resourses. W e believe in the separate missions of our two colleges, but further assert the mutuality of those purposes when combined in the service of higher education in this significant core of the Commonwealth. We also believe that we can better serve this end by the joint commitment of Harrisburg Area Community College and The Pennsylvania State University to this most desired end. This most important step is taken with the encouragement and, in fact, Mr . James R. Thorne, Capitol's Records, Registration and Scheduling Officer, stated he will be in contact with the faculty during that sixth week. He stated that students must take the initiative to complete their work on time and submit it to the individual faculty. A rule termed "0-4" was also passed at that meeting. Following is that formal statement: "A student who, for reasons beyond his control, is absent from a final examination may have his grade deferred upon authorization of the program head." Still another change involved rule "M-3". The change provided a vehicle whereby students may repeat a course in which they have received a 'D' or 'F', and only the last grade achieved will be used in calculating the GPA, although previous grades will remain on the transcript. Following is the official report explaining that procedure: "To exercise this option, the student must file a Course Repeat Notice Form with the Records Office during the same *************** * * k * * * * * * * * * * * * The Marine Corps Officer Selection Team Will be on campus March 12th. March 8, 1973 original support of both our faculties. During the meeting, it was noted that HACC is indeed "our best customer," by feeding Capitol with the largest single enrollment from any junior level institution of higher education. Dr. George Wolf, who headed the aforementioned task force, stated that this idea by may be expanded to include other junior colleges in the Region Six vicinity. McDermott explained that members of his administration have approached Pierce Junior College, Philadelphia, with a similar proposal. Mr. Walter Slygh, Academic Services Officer, related that many colleges in the Michigan system have adopted such a "cooperation." Wolf further explained the intricacies of the proposal, stating that interchange of students to gain credit in required course is essential. Dr. Daniel Poore, Head of the Division of Administration and Business believed that a mutual listing of courses in the catalogues would be of great value to secondary school students. ** * * Procedures period utilized for the designation of the pass-fail option, which is held during the last three days of the third week of the term. "If a Course Repeat Notice is not filed, the usual requirements of Rule "E-1" shall remain in effect, Before filing the form, the student should consult his advisor to be certain he is not exceeding the limits outlined in Rule "E-15" regarding the number of terms he may be enrolled in a particular degree program. "The Course Repeat Notice Form must be approved by the head of the program in which the course is offered. This is to assure that the student is repeating a course which is appropriate and correct in order to benefit by Rule "M -3b", and also to avoid any confusion which might result when courses with the same number are taken more than once because they have a different content." The last paragraph concerns Special Topics and courses that may be substituted for the course in which the unsatisfactory work was obtained.
