DREADED
DISEASE
TAKES
TOLL
by John Sheridan
Ed. Note: Mr. Sheridan
is Vice-President of the
Student Government
Association. Following is
his commentary on certain
issues involving the SGA.
I've been contemplating
writing this article for the past
several weeks. I held off thinking
things would get better, but
unfortunately they haven't.
I've been attacked by a
disease known to some students
at Capitol as "Senioritis." The
symptoms are characterized by a
growing amount of apathy,
disgust, and the "I don't give a
damn" attitude. Along with
others, I agree that they're not
good attitutes to have. So,
WATCH OUT or you'll get
them, too. •
The disease has reached
epidemic proportions in the
Student Government
Association Senate. Many of us
look for a cure, but our research
is hopeless. It is this writer's
opinion that the power of
Student Government has
dwindled away to nothing. If
you've ever gone to a meeting,
you know what I'm talking
about. We'll sit there for hours
arguing about certain problems
that we, as students, feel should
be resolved. When we finally
come to a conclusion (which is
usually in the form of a
recommendation) we send out
memos to those administrators
who can remedy the problem.
My dismay comes from the fact
that no action comes from these
administratiors. I'll site some
examples to back up my story.
First, we asked that Spring
and Summer course schedules be

submitted early to aid in the
simplification of registration. We
asked to have them submitted
by the third week of the winter
term. We are now entering the
seventh week, a little past the
deadline fellas.
Second, we were given
information on the war college
and calendar issues at a time
when it was too late to do
anything.
Third, we asked that the
outrageous parking fee of
$22.50 per year be
substantiated. Their action was
referred to a committee which
gave us a schedule break down
of costs' and revenues. As a
student in business, I did not
consider this break down
substantiating. If anything, I
considered this break down as
evidence that the fee is too high.
As of this date, reduction in the
fee is NOT imminent.
Fourth, many of use feel that
our security program needs
revamping. The action on this
issue was referred to ANOTHER
committee, which may meet
once a month, to get absolutely
nothing done.
Fifth, as some of you know,
this campus is in store for a new
building called the
"Multi-purpose" (or
NO-purpose) building. Again, we
had students who worked hard
trying to convey student interest
in this building. We discovered
recently that we had NO SAY
THE CAPITOLIST
WHATSOEVER in the facilities
that went into this building. I
could write pages of cased like
those mentioned above, but it
would only disgust me further.
The only two proposals that
this writer has seen any action
taken on were the situations
involving the round table and
the student directory. Just
think, we got our directory after
only twenth weeks of our
thirty-seven week academic
week was over! Big deal!
The question is, where do we
go from here? Do we let this
dreaded disease get out of hand?
"Senioritis" has already taken its
toll. Four members have
dropped out of SGA because of
this disease. It has reached the
critical state in many others.
Personally, I won't let it get the
best of me. I won't give some
people that satisfaction! My
gripe is that the administration
knows the cure to this disease,
but they are unwilling to
implement it.
The cure is to give SGA the
authority it rightfully deserves.
STOP referring the issues to
worthless committees! Get some
administrators off their duffs
and make them earn the salary
WE are paying them!
