This Week in the SGA
by R. W. Bonaker
Ed. Note: At the
February 12 meeting of the
Student Government
Association, the issue of a
proposed cut-off of all
funds for the campus
yearbook, The Capitolite,
dominated the session.
Consequently, last week's
report centered only on the
yearbook crisis. But other
business was discussed.
Following is the remainder
of the report of that
meeting.
FEBRUARY 12
Vice-President John Sheridan
proposed that SGA purchase a
portable ice-skating rink as a
senior class gift. The type he
recommended is 200x85 feet
and would cost approximately
$722. The rink would be
bordered with 2xlo inch boards
and the body would consist of
4-mill plastic. He thought a
logical place for the location of
the portable rink to be the
athletic field where the football
lights would be utilized. Upon
purchase of the rink, Sheridan
proposed that it be given to Bob
Stanley, Recreation/Athletics
Coordinator, who would have
the duty to install, store and
repair the rink. Sheridan said the
portable rink lasts on the average
of four years. Senate members
said it was a good idea, and it
was referred to the Finance
Committee.
President Mike Dini
announced he had received a
manuscript from University Park
containing policies and
guidelines for student
organizations. Dini said Dr. John
Grimm, Dean of Student Affairs,
was forming a committee to read
the document and determine
how the stated laws will affect
general student activities.
In other action, Senator John
Murphy (Jr., at-large) was
appointed to the
Election/Screening Committee.
Other members of the group are
Senator Marilyn Levin,
Chairman, Senator Michael
Pierce, Senator Judith LePere,
Gene Bryan and Mike Jones.
The Senate, in an unanimous
resolution, stated it would
cooperate with the Faculty
Organization should it approve
the proposed Special Programs
Planning Committee, by sending
a student representative.

February 19
President Mike Dint
announced that Bob Tompson,
the senior business program
senator, had tended his
resignation. Joe Kubiak was
promoted to fill Thompson's
spot, but that left yet another
vacancy on the senate.
The Election/Screening
recommended that Bob Chaapel
be given a seat on the Student
Court and Rich O'Brien a
position on the
Campus/Community Service
Community. They were
approved by the Senate.
Nick Spengler and Gene
Bryan were appointed to the
Senate, pending formal approval
at next week's meeting. One
senate vacancy remains; that of a
senior from the Math-Science
Program.

Jerry Baskoff, Att
by Mark Israel
Attitude. It's such an
important word in the world of
competitive sports.
Attitude. Without it, a great
team will most certainly not
play to its fullest potential, and
possibly come out losers.
Attitude. With it, a bad team
can look good, and possibly win
more than their share of ball
games. Just as one player can be
called a game breaker, attitude
can be called a team breaker--it
will make or break the best (and
worst) of ballclubs.
Usually, reserves are the
prime molders of a team's
attitude, particularly on one
with a losing record. They have
the most to gripe about. They
can always say that if they were
playing, the team would be
winning.
Jerry Baskoff, a 5'10" senior
from Neshaminy, Pa. is one
reserve who knows what his job
is, Sure, he could be blaming the
coach, the starters, and just
about anyone connected with
the team for it's losing record.
But the point is, he doesn't.
Baskoff, like Pat Bentley,
views his role as important to
the team. He's not looking for
personal glory, just a way to

help make the team a little bit
better. "I'm the cheerleader
type,"says Baskoff. "I'm always in
tne game in one way or another.
I hope, like Pat (Bently) that I
can get everybody up for the
game."
Baskoff seems to admire
Bentley, and the job he does for
the team. "Bentley does it, He
was a starter, but he got pushed
down and never complained."
Now, Bentley is almost
unanimously considered the
leader of the team by way of his
attitude.
Baskoff feels his role is
similar. The only difference is
that he is at his noisiest during
the game. When Bentley is
finished leading the pre-game
warmups, Baskoff takes over and
leads the cheering from the
bench.
Don't get the impression that
Baskoff is completely happy
with his role. He, like all the
other reserves, would like to see
more playing time. It's simply a
matter of recognizing his role
with the team and carrying it
out.
Actually, by wanting to play
more and giving it his all,

CUP EXAM DEADLINE NEARS
The College Level Entrance
Program (CLEP) Examinations
will be offered at Capitol
Campus on March 17, at 8:00
a.m.
The tests, offered monthly at
the Capitol Campus test center,
enable individuals who have
acquired knowledge outside the
formal classroom to receive
credit toward college entrance
for that knowledge.
Two types of CLEP
examinations will be offered.
The general examination
measures achievement in five
basic areas of Liberal Arts --
English Composition,
Humanities, Mathematics,
Natural and Social Sciences and
History. The subject
examinations measure
achievement in 33 specific
college courses, including four in
the medical technology field.
The Office of Admissions is
now receiving applications for
those desiring to take the test in
March. Deadline for the subject
exams is February 26 and March
12 is the last date to apply for
the general battery of five,
one-hour exams.
Many other institutions of
higher learning in Central
tude--The Team Breaker
Baskoff feels he is making a
contribution to the team. "My
trying to beat out guys for their
spots makes them stronger."
As do all members of the
team, Baskoff speaks highly of
what coach Al Williams has done
for them. "He's a good coach.
Everybody respects him, and
he's the one that's made the
difference between last year and
this. Even though this is a better
team physically, with more
ability, strength, and depth, it's
still the Coach that brought us
together and has made us
perform better."
Baskoff feels the team main
strength is its quickness. He
compared Tom Ogden to Spring
Garden's Ernie Strange. "I have
a lot of respect for Strange. He's
a team player and makes others
score. That's what Ogden is to
us."
He also spoke highly of Steve
Flutter. "It's a shame Steve got
hurt. He has more heart than
anyone. He's not the biggest
forward in the world but no one
is going to beat him on desire.
And he rarely makes a
mistake--his consistency is
amazing."

The Photo Club meets every
Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the rear
portion of the Placement Office.
The club offers new and
interesting visual learning
experiences and skills. If you are
interested, come to the meetings
as conducted by President Jerry
Reich.
Baskoff, who didn't play
basketball at Bucks County
Community College, went out
for the team here because he
thought he could make it and
thus help the school. Jerry made
the team because he's an athlete.
An outfielder at Cheltenham
High School, as well as a wide
receiver on the football team, his
best sport was baseball.
He described himself as "a
decent hitter, about .280 or
.290." He must have been at
least that, for he received a
scholarship offer from
Monmouth College and a
grant-in-aid offer from Rider
College.
Jerry Baskoff, the athlete, is
just one part of the reason for
Capitol Campus improvement
this year. In whatever the team
does, he contributes as much to
it as anyone. Baskoff knows the
meaning and importance of the
intangible factor the team
breaker attitude.
