    Capitol records first win
over Schuylkill
by R: W. Bonaker
After the game jubilation
reigned. Capitol had won its first
basketball contest of the season,
having sustained losses in its first
three games.
Capitol defeated Penn State's
Schuylkill Campus on January
23 by 96-64. Coach Al Williams,
who before the „game was
confident that a win "could turn
our season around" started
Larry Chupka, Paul Hook and
Bob Lambert on the front line.
Tom Ogden and Jim Merlano
opened the game in the
backcourt, Merlano starting in
place of Rick Schropp who had
a pulled
,gr oin muscle.
V, point victory margin
betrays,- ; ,the closeness of the
game during the first 10
minutes. Capitol scored only
after two minutes had expired
and then fell behind by 8-3 with
15 minutes left in the first half.
After a time out, Capitol crept
back only to have Lambert pick
up his second personal foul of
the game. Schuylkill then had a
13-7 lead, paced by star guard
Don Zimmerman, who entered
the fray averaging nearly 23
points a game.
The turning point of the
game came as Zimmerman
quickly committed two
turnovers and took a couple wild
shots. He then was in the
doghouse with his coach and saw
infrequent action during the
remainder of the contest. He
finished the game with eight
points, his lowest total of the
year. Schuylkill, which ended
the game with a 5-6 record, has
won every game this season in
which Zimmerman has scored at
least 17 points.
With Zimmerman out,
Capitol came back, a notable
play being Merlano's two handed
set shot from 25 feet to tie the
score at 13. Hook got a
three-point play to make it
18-13 Capitol. With 7:10
remaining, the visiting Schuylkill
squad was still close at 19-24 but
Capitol scored 11 of the next 13
points to widen the gap. At the
half, Capitol led 42-29. Exciting
plays included a Chupka
rebound and an outlet pass to
Lambert for a layup and a 25
foot "swish" by Schropp, who
had just come off the bench.
Ogden scored several buckets on
fastbreak lay ups.
Capitol was able to control
the play after the midpoint of
the half when the man-to-man
full court press started to pay
off. The much taller Capitol
squad utilized its height in
deploying the fastbreak and was
able to relax the press after
gaining a comfortable lead.
Capitol still did not display any

real polish, having committed 17
turnovers in the first half, but
compensated with aggressiveness
on the boards, getting offensive
rebounds on two occasions in
free-throw situations. Capitol
shot 47% from the field while
Schuylkill was only 13-42 for
30%. Capitol also had a 29-22
edge in rebounding. At the half,
Chupka had 11 points followed
by Ogden with 9, Lambert 8 and
Hook and Schropp each had six.
Capitol picked up right where
it left off and extended its lead
to 49-35 with 17:14 remaining
in the second half. The lead grew
to 21 with 14 minutes left. At
10 minutes, Capitol led 68-43.
By that time, the outcome was
evident as Schuylkill coach,
players and cheerleaders sat
gl oom il y on the bench.
Capitol continued to
dominate the game with its
fastbreak offense and had leads
of 76-47 and 81-51 before
Williams sent in the reserves with
nearly eight minutes left. The
scrubs held the lead and with
four minutes to go, it was 87-58.
Jerry Baskoff got his first points
of the year on a hard earned
bucket to the delight of the
crowd, with his teammates
giving him a standing ovation.
Schuylkill's Mike Rudiman led
all scorers with 23 but Capitol
posted the next four leaders
with Chupka getting 20, Ogden
18, Hook 17, and Lambert 14.
It was indeed "turn around
night" for the Capitol Varsity
squad. The team demonstrated
what it had to overwhelm their
opponent. The next regularly
scheduled contest is tomorrow
night against Stevens Trade. The
game will be played in Lancaster
at 7 p.m.
