Page 8 A demonstration of the new universal gym apparatus newly installed in the Recreation/Athletics Building. Base Gym Open Again by Rich O'Brien The Capitol Campus gym was reopened for use on November 27 after completion of the repairs of the damage caused by the summer flooding. The influx of water resulted in a buckled and warped gym floor. The question of whether to replace the floor or somehow save it by repairs was the major problem for the maintenance department. The gym floor is about 6,000 square feet in size and consists of 2x4 inch sleepers laid over a concrete slab, with a diagonal sub-floor, of one inch thickness. A felt vapor barrier also lies underneath the floor surface of hard maple. Repairs were initiated by cutting test samples in the surfact and examining them for Each team had their big moment of triumph at one time or another during the league games, so all was not total defeat for any one team. Following is a list of the teams and their "Big Wins": THEM - 28 to 10 (It) - 15 to 0 (Big Bird Packers) - 30 to 12 (Beta Chi 'A') - 21 to 8 (Ramses) - 30 to 0 (Mr. Swiss) - 38 to 8 (Raiders) - 50 to 0 (Beta Chi B) - 23 to 6 (Fac-Staf) - 44 to 0 (Schaffer) - 18 to 6 (Rag Time) MR. The test holes revealed the major obstacle to be a shallow "lake" of water between the sleepers and the surface. Many attempts to dry the floor were made, but were unsuccessful because the vapor layer was saturated with water. But the problem was solved by an ingenious plan developed by Dave Dreibelis and the other personnel of the maintenance department. They hooked up a system of fans which were designed to blow air between the sleepers through the 60 foot width of the gym to evaporate the water. The drying process took two months to complete and was carefully monitored by moisture content readings. The result was a perfectly repaired gym floor and a saving of $25,000, which would be the estimated cost of a new floor. (A student from the Junior Class is preferred.) ** * * Tuition (from page it) the "Yale Daily News," students have not greeted the program enthusiastically. He commented that students see the program as a means of forcing them to accept the $650 rise in tuition over the past two years, and feels that the 35-year repayment plan represents a form of "indentured servitude." Duke University has also adopted a plan similar to that of Yale. Students there, however, have only ten years to repay loans, and if they fail to do so through a tax on their income, they must repay the ramainder in regular installments. Student participation in the Duke program has been restricted to 70 and the administratiom reports that far fewer than that number of students have shown interest in the program. Under the Harvard program, students, are required to repay loans at varying rates and for varying periods of time, depending on their income status. Each student must repay a minimum of $360 per year after graduation, but no student must pay more than six percent of his or her annual income if that income falls below $7200. A similar program presently under consideration at Columbia University would allow student loans of $5OO per year, plus any increased tuition costs, to be repaid over a period of 20 years.
