November 30, 1972 Dr. Francis Ferguson Ferguson Appointed Grad Program Chief Dr. Francis Ferguson, Professor of Enviromental Design at Capitol Campus has been named Chairman of the Regional Planning Program. His promotion was announced last week by Dr. Robert E. McDermott, Provost. An architect and planning consultant, Dr. Ferguson joined the Capitol Campus faculty in the fall of 1971 after serving as Associate Professor of Urban Planning in the School of Architecture at Columbia University. While at the campus, Dr. Ferguson has concentrated on developing the computer graphics and design capability within the Regional Planning Program. After obtaining his architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Ferguson did graduate work at Harvard and Columbia Universities, receiving his Master of Science and Doctor Philosophy degrees in Urban Planning from the latter institution. Local taxes, other dealer charges not Included. He practiced architecture and planning in New York and Paris prior to becoming a member of the faculty at Columbia in 1964. While there, Dr. Ferguson received the William Kinne Fellows Memorial Fellowship and spent the 1962-63 academic year studying in Europe. Also he is the recipient of a postdoctoral grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for work on planning and design theory. Dr. Ferguson's major work to date is a United Nations sponsored development plan for New Providence Island and the City of Nassau in the Bahamas which he prepared with the late Paul Lester Wiener under the Auspices of Columbia's Institute of Urban Environment. He also served as a senior research associate of that institute. He is co-author of the "East River Renewal Study," which involved the design of the area bordering the East River immediately across from the United Nations in New York City. Dr. Ferguson is a licensed architect in New York and Pennsylvania and is a member of the American Institute of Architects as well as the Society of Architectural Historians, The Architectural League of New York, Environmental Design Research Association, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, the American Institute of Planners and the American Society of Planning Officials. While serving with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in France from 1956 to 1958, he was cited for the design of facilities for the selection ceremony of the Unknown Soldier of World War II at the American Cemetary and Memorial, Epinal, France.
