PAGE 8 PSU Demolishes Syracuse and W.Va. In the past two weeks, the Penn State Nittany Lion football team has turned back two of its perennial rivals. In two bruising contests, Penn State defeated Syracuse, 17-0 at University Park and West Virginia, 28-19 at Morgantown, W. Va. Against Syracuse, the Lion defense proved supreme as time after time it stymied the Orange attack. Halfback John Cappelletti proved what kind of runner he is as he rolled up 162 yards on 24 carries, for one touchdown. The Lions held a 7-0 halftime advantage and the outcome was in doubt until they scored on an Al Vitiello field goal and a last minute touchdown by quarterback John Hufnagel in the closing minute. The West Virginia game began with a bang! In the nationally televised contest, Mountaineer fleet-back Kerry Mar bury, ranking among the nation's leaders in individual scoring, returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown. West Va. missed the extra point. However, the Lions were undaunted and came right back with a sustained drive. Cappelletti picked up yardage by driving into the center of the Mountaineer defense. The big play of the drive was a 22 yard pass from Hufnagel to tight end Bob Rickenbach. State gave up the ball on the Mountaineer 6 when in a third and goal situation, Hufnagel was hit by Dennis Reid who jarred the ball loose for Bruce Huffman. Mountaineer QB Bernie Galiffa, who completed 21 out of 37 passes for 341 yards and touchdown during the game, faded back to throw from inside his own 10 and the ball slipped from his fingers. State's Randy Crowder intercepted and returned it to the West Va. 12. On third and goal from the 7, Hufnagel found end Dan Natale at the back of the end zone for the score. Vitiello added the placement. On first down following the ensuing kickoff, Galiffa again dropped back to throw. Again it was intercepted, this time by a diving Greg Ducatte, at the Mount's 39. The Lions failed to pick up the needed yardage, so Vitiello booted a 32 yard field goal, giving State a 10-6 first quarter lead. In the second quarter, the Lions advanced the ball to their own 47 following a West Va. punt. Hufnagel was called for intentionally grounding the ball under a hard rush. It was a judgement call as there was a receiver in the vicinity. In fact, reserve back Walt Addie nearly touched the ball. The Lions were penalized back to the 33 where they faced a third and 29 situation. Hufnagel dropped back and faked a long pass but lofted a screen pass to Kenny Andrews who dashed in for the score after a breath-taking run. He got key blocks from Phil Laporta, Natale and Jim Scott along the way. Steve Stilley dropped the snap on the try for the extra point, making the score 16-6 in the Lion's favor. State later got two more points after John Skorupan blocked a punt and Mountaineer Danny Buggs kicked the rolling ball out of the end zone from the Mount's 20. West Va. then punted to State and Cappeletti returned the ball 68 yards to the Mount's 2. Bob Nagle then got the score as he crossed the goal, only to have the ball squirt from his arms, and , the Mount's recovered. However, as soon as he crossed the goal, the play was ruled dead, allowing for the touchdown. The conversion made it 25-6. West Va. came right back with a 75 yard, four play drive as Galiffa hit Buggs three times, the finar one an 18 yard touchdown culmunating the drive. The Mounts passed to get two but failed. The active first half ended with the Nits on top, 25-12. State failed to move the ball on its first series in the third quarter. An exchange of punts followed. State again got the ball only to have Cappelletti fumble it away to Bob Sims. West Va. had a fourth and goal at the State eight and tried a pass play. Ducatte smacked Buggs before he could get to the ball, the penalty resulting in a first down at the one yard line. Brian Childs then plunged in for the score and Sims made the placement. The Nits ate up the clock in the fourth quarter with a punishing ground attack. Cappelletti reeled off big inside yardage while Hufnagel gained over 50 yards on three runs. It took two series of plays before Vitiello clinched the game with a 25 yard field goal. The game ended with State inside the WV 15. Capelletti set a school record with 34 carries for the game while piling up 155 yards. Hufnagel became State's all time leader in total offense as he completed 7 of 15 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 3,094 total yards. Penn State's next game is this Saturday against Maryland at Beaver Stadium. With a 6-1 record, State is now headed for a bowl. They should beat Maryland by four touchdowns.
