The First Annual Capitol
Campus Bathtub Race is over.
Last Wednesday, May 24, five
groups entered the race, one of
the entries from Penn State's
Berks Campus.
The entry from Berks won the
race over the 3 and one-quarter
mile campus course. The tub,
Denton's Disaster, just edged out
the Ghoti entry near the finish,
along side the Classroom
Building.
Before the race, a
Best-Looking Tub contest was
held. The highest score possible
after the judging was 45 points.
Denton's Disaster rated 42
points and Capitol's Ghoti entry
garnered 37. The remaining
entries, all from Capitol, were

the Ghooles', driven by Paul
Shewchk; the XGl's, and
Captain Amerika.
Denton's Disaster finished
first, followed by Ghoti, driven
by Mark Weiss, Captain
Amerika, Ghooles and the
XGl's. The former servicemen
had slight difficulty manuevering
their tub because they had to
push it even when the course
went downhill.
At the start, the Berks entry
steered into the XGl's tub,
possibly damaging the steering
mechanism on the home-made
vehicle. It was a tight race
throughout the entire contest.
Denton's Disaster set the course
record with a time of 18 minutes
and 46 seconds. At the finish,
the Ghoti entry rammed
theßerks tub as the action was
frentic.
All of the entries were
bathtubs which were mounted
upon wheels forming a three
wheel drive shaft. The tubs each
had a steering mechanism, with
the only means of propulsion
being two teams of people
shoving the tub. The race course
covered the entire campus,
excluding the residence areas.
Finals Reached
In Tennis Tourney
Capitol Campus will stage an
intramural tennis tournament to
determine Capitol's
representatives in the
Inter-University match at
University Park, June 3.
The singles finalists are Jack
Hilbert, a junior engineer, and
John Phillips, a senior business
student. Hilbert reached the
finals by defeating Bob Guss 6-1,
6-1, Ron Warhola, 6-0, 6-2 and
Bob Lopez 7-6, 6-1. Phillips had
only two matches before
reaching the finals. He defeated
Grant Berry 6-3, 6-4 and Jim
O'Donnell 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles, the finalist teams
were Bob Lopez and Jim
O'Donnell, both senior business
students, and the team of
Phillips and Hilbert.
After an exciting, artistic
display of tennis, Lopez and
O'Donnell defeated Phillips and
Hilbert in 3 long sets, all
reaching the 9 point tie breaker.
The scores were 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.
The tournament on June 3
will be composed of
representatives from each of the
PSU campus'. Capitol has a good
chance of finishing high by
sending these four outstanding
players.

Capitol Wins
Bowling
Championship
On May 19th and 20th, the
Capitol Campus bowling team
competed at University Park
against other regional winners
for the Championship of the
Student Affairs Invitational
Tournament.
Three rounds of bowling were
rolled. Scoring was based on
match points, the team with the
most match points being
declared the winner. To win a
match point a team had to win
at least two of the three games
plus total pins.
In the first round against
Beaver Campus, Capitol really
put it together in the third game,
after spliting the first two games,
by rolling a very respectable 938
series. This was the highest series
rolled in the tournament. As a
result, Capitol Campus won the
first match by a convincing
2551-2484 margin on total pin
count.
The second round was the
most crucial contest of the
tournament as Capitol's
opposition was Altoona, which
had previously routed Hazleton
Campus with a 2649 series in
their first round. Capitol, with
consistent bowling, immediately
applied the pressure by taking
the first two games by a total
margin of 110 pins. However,
Altoona came out fighting in the
third game, and Capitol had to
come from behind with seven
marks in the 10th frame to avoid
a split and win total pins by a
2477-2438 score.
On Saturday morning, May
20th, the Capitol team came to
the University Lanes fired up
needing only a split against
Hazleton to take first place.
Capitol took the first two games
and total by a 2523-2376 count
to win their third match point
and the first place trophy.
Capitol's Cliff Claypool won
individual honors by taking high
average in the tournament with
series' of 601, 586 and 601.
