Page 4 1972 Varsity Capitol's varsity basketball team stretched its winning streak to two games by defeating Northeastern Christian Junior College on February 22. The Lions traveled all the way to the suburbs of Philadelphia to come off with an 86 to 80 victory. The bus which was to transport the lions to the Villanova Fieldhouse was late in arriving, consequently the game started over an hour late. Capitol got untracked early and sprung out to a big lead but Christian, trailed by only five at the half, 41-36. The teams stayed close together for much of the second period and were in a tie at 66 with only three minutes remaining. Then the Lions creamed Christian with a late scoring spree and won by six points. Five Lions got into double figures with guard Rick Miller leading the way with 21 points. Joe Duda, back in shape after a nagging injury, followed with 19. Ted Sites had 14 markers and Paul Hook had 14 points and contributed 14 rebounds. Larry Chupka added 11 points and Steve Hutter followed with seven. Earlier this season, Capitol obliterated the Christians, 124 to 75. The win gives the Lions a record of four wins and nine losses. Thompson brushed past four opponents en route to this year's crown. Thompson won a hotly contested final 3 game set with Ken Debiak. The scores were: 16-21, 21-17, and 21-16. Last year's champion, Tom Leister, failed to make the deadline on his first match and forfeited out of this year's tournament.
