BICYCLE DERBY
by Joe Zalewski
Temperatures in the 90’s and
sunny, cloudless skies greeted
the 9 male racers for the
Intramural Bicycle Derby.
The race course covered a
total of 6.75 miles (15 laps). A
LeMans start was used to get the
race underway. All racers started
near the volleyball net on Nelson
Avenue, continued down
Nelson, up Jones, down
Kirtland, and then back around
Nelson.
A wide variety of bikes were
used in the derby; including
three 10 speed racers, various
styles of 3 and 5 speed bikes,
and even an old heavyweight
bike equipped with horn and
basket.
Mike Kilgallon drew the pole
position for the start, but as it
turned out, that was to be the
closest he ever came to first
place.
Les Blum of the Raiders, the
pre-race favorite, was last out of
the start but quickly recovered
and took the lead at the corner
of Jones and Kirtland. His lead
was never challenged.
The first casualty of the race
occurred during the second lap,
as Karl Grozinski’s 10 speed
racer had equipment problems
and he was forced to drop out of
the race. Meanwhile, Blum
continued to increase his lead
and lap the slower bikes. Tom
Perry, who rode the only
heavyweight bike in the race,
made good use of the horn on
his bike to wave and signal to
the many people who watched
the derby from the side of the
road.
TROJAN
HEADER
by Carl “Sunt” Grozinski
Den “Bilker” McKernan
Tom “Crazy Cat” Coligan
As the Trojans finish a
victorious (7-1) season with a
display of team work, the
lubricated Trojans snatched a
double header.
The first game saw the
pitcher Jim “Jakio” Jeitner give
up 1 run as the lubricated
Troians scored 16 times.
The first five Trojan batters
came-across with base hits. The
big sticks were “Baby-Face”
Roberts, “Sunt” Grozinski,
“Gramps” Mercantile, and
“Red-Neck” Herety, all hitting 4
for 5.
Homeruns were hit by
Herety, and Kelly. The defensive
standout who is up and coming
is Skip Lewis.
X-Rated was also there led by
“Babe Ruth” Stanley, going 0
for 4.
In the second game Tony
“Shirt” Berardi and “Switch
Hitting” Rossi, led the Team to
9 runs. However, they fell 14
runs short of victory. Although
on the injured list Ralph “Ego”
Weinstein, sparked the hitting
with two double baggers. The
defensive standouts was led by
Tom “Crazy Cat” Coligan, who
climaxed the sixth inning with
the only unassisted double play.
There was a three man collision
in right field. After the bang
between “Siint” Grozinski,
“Crazy Cat” Coligan and “Flip”
Raub, the only one stil. erect
was “Crazy Cat”.
The preventive Trojan infield
kept center fielder Gene “Wop”
Fazzie, from sucking up any
balls. Pitcher Paul Trimborne
went all the way. Leading the
Trojans in and out of each
inning was Captain Den “Skin”
McKernan.
After / laps, Les Blum still
had the lead and was timed at
9:36.0. He was followed by
Florio, Hartle, and Otterman.
The positions remained the
same at the end, as Blum
fininshed with a one lap lead
over Florio and a 2 lap lead over
Hartle and Otterman. Following
the leaders were: Hacker,
Voglesong, Perry, and Kilgallon.
Blum completed his 15 laps
in 21 minutes, 8 seconds.
The Raiders made a clean
sweep of the first three places
with the DMZ getting fourth and
fifth and the Studs getting the
last 3 spots.
In the women’s event, only
two dedicated racers entered.
They were: Becky Myers and
Connie Sinko, both of the Little
Studs.
The women covered the same
course as the men but only for a
total of 6 laps.
Sinko edged out Myers for
first by a matter of inches as
both girls rode a fine race. The
winner was clocked in 11
minutes 14.6 seconds.
ALUMNI
MEMBERSHIP
In about one month’s time
the membership of the Capitol
Campus Alumni Association will
be increased from its present
membership of 777 to
approximately 1,300. It is to be
hoped that the infusion of new
blood will restore life to what
has been a somewhat moribund
organization. As a further
assurance of new strength in the
old body, the constitution of the
Capitol Campus Alumni
Association provides that four
new directors will be added on
an annual basis from the current
crop of graduates. The
procedure for the election of the
new directors will be defined in
a subsequent paragraph.
The diploma that will be
received at the time of
graduation stipulates that it was
earned at The Pennsylvania State
University rather than at the
Capitol Campus. As graduates of
The Pennsylvania State
University you are eligible for
membership in the Penn State
Alumni Association, and
membership in that august body
is a prerequisite for membership
in the Capitol Campus Alumni
Association, which is defined as
a “constituent society” of the
Penn State Alumni Association.
As previously stated, four
members of the Board of
Directors of the Capitol Campus
Alumni Association will need to
be elected prior to the June 19th
graduation date. The elected
individuals will replace four
members of the Board whose
term expires in June of this year.
One member is to be elected
from the disciplines outlined
below:
One member from the
Business Program.
One member from the
Elementary Education Program.
One member from the
combined programs of
Humanities and Social Science.
One member from the
Technology Program.
The elected member should
be willing to serve and to
recognize the responsibility for
attending anck participating in
the called meetings. Membership
on the Board of Directors
provides an opportunity to serve
the Capitol Campus as only the

An Evening Of Competition And Fun
At Second Annual Rollerama
by Marc Joseph
The second annual intramural
.roller skating evening took place
on May 11, at the Gold Skate
Rink on Route 230 east of
Middletown.
The teams represented in
intramural competition were the
Studs, Brand X and DMZ for the
men and the Little Studs,
X-Rated, DMZ, YJCers and the
Funny Co. sported the female
entries. Besides the team
competition the rink was filled
with students who wanted to
skate for fun and cheer their
favorite team to victory in the
various events. Along with the
fact that skating is an enjoyable
sport it should be mentioned
that the first one hundred
students were admitted free and
the late comers were charged a
minimal entrance fee.
After a few moments of
warm-up skating, the first
competitive event took place.
The first event was the 3-lap
individual race. In the men’s
competition the results were a
first place for Harry Voglesong
of the Studs, second place to

graduates of this campus can

members of the senior class in
each of the indicated areas.
Unfortunately there is no
formal organization within the
senior class to provide the
necessary machinery for
nominating and electing
individuals to these important
posts. In previous years meetings
have been called for the seniors
in the various disciplines to
nominate and elect, but these
have typically been poorly
attended and not representative
of the classes as a whole. It is
therefore suggested that
properly qualified seniors
exercise their initiative this year
in nominating and electing well
qualified individuals to represent
them on the Board of Directors.
Interested
seniors are urged to contact

Studs. In the women’s 3-lap the
Little Studs were led by Cathy
Struble in sweeping the first
three places and everybody in
the rink knew that the Studs
were there to try and dominate
the competition.
The second event was the
Skate Wheel Relay which was
one of the most exciting events
of the evening due to its direct
competition of four teams
consisting of four skaters on
each team. The event was won
by the Studs (Jeff Hafer, Dick
White, Denny Hall and Harry
“Snake” Voglesong). The DMZ
(Don Hossler, Jeff Seaton, Joe
Rice, and Chuck Stefanic) came
in second.
After an intermission and a
chance for the spectators to
skate the third event which was
the pursuit race got under way.
The object of this event is to

opponent’s team by tearing a
ribbon off the belt that they
were wearing (the same used in
flag football). Sixteen skaters
started, but after a few hectic
laps around the track only three
remained, those being
Voglesong, Dale Young and
Steve Kagay of the Brand X. The
remaining skaters pursued each
other with extreme caution but
Voglesong emerged victorious
after Kagay and Young made the
mistake of taking falls while
skating. The women’s event was
judged a tie between Donna
Garrett who was cheered by her
husband Bill of basketball fame
and Bob Stanley’s wife, Kathy.
Third and fourth were taken by
the Little Studs by Janie
Bodrock and Ginger
Gutenkunst.
The fourth event was the
Coed Relay in which the Studs
dominated by taking first and
second place. Dick White
showed remarkable speed in this
race by seemingly running across
the floor and amusing everyone
with his sliding and crawling
routine to the finish line.
By this time everyone
realized that the main event of
the evening, the six lap
individual race was about to
start. What it boiled down to
was a heads up dual between
Voglesong who could do nothing
wrong on the rink and the
ex-marine Steve Kagay who had
his troubles earlier but was ready
to challenge the Snake in a
battle that couldn’t be averted.
Also, entered in this event was
the always tough Chuck Stefanic
of the DMZ, so as the buzzer
sounded it was anybody’s race.
Kagay jumped out to an early
lead with Voglesong, Stefanic
and the pack close behind.
Stefanic was taken out early as
Kagay held the inside with
Voglesong right behind.
As the race ended Kagay kept
everyone in check and the old
man went on to victory for
Brand X with Voglesong second,
Dave Bowman and John Nicolo
finishing third and fourth also
for Brand X. The women’s event
was won easily by Samantha
Bower of the DMZ with Kathy
Stanley second for the X-Rated
arid Janie Bodrock third for the
little Studs.
The overall finish for the men
teams were the Studs first,
Brand X second, DMZ' third and
for the women it was first place
for the Little Studs followed by
X-Rated, DMZ, YJCers and the
Funny Co.
As the evening came to a
close all the skaters were tired
and sore but pleased with the
competition and sociable skating
that they had participated in. It
would be a safe assumption that
Capitol Campus’ evening of
skating would be a welcomed
event in semesters to come.
