the CAPITOLIST Vol. 4, No. 4 THE MADWOMAN IS COMING! On June 7 and 8, 1971 the curtain will rise in the Classroom Building Auditorium on the second student theatrical production of the year, Jean Giraudoux’ “The Madwoman of Chaillot”. This farcical madcap, to be produced by the Humanities 4998 Class, will be directed by Mr. Budney with assistance from student director, Ned Irish. Leading the cast will be the able Mrs. Thelma Barnett, cast as Countess Aurelia, the Madwoman. She is joined by three fellow madwomen played by Doe Perkowska, Samantha Bower and Ann Ferrino. Notable male roles are Thomas Ogden (President), John Livi (Ragpicker) and Ed Hoffman (Prospector) and Michael Zimmerman (Pierre). A supporting cast includes Jerry Till, Flossie Jancsar, Richard Schroth, Suzanne Jordan, Lynn Mastrone, Mike Blank, Sandy Simpson, Ron Haag, Joe Luciani, Gary Wetterhall, Dave Keller, Ned Irish and Millie Royer. ' The play, produced on Broadway and revived as the musical “Dear World”, centers about the plot of infamous businessmen to drill for oil in Paris. Their scheme is foiled by the aging Countess Aurelia, whose adventures will surely captivate the audience. The play has most recently appeared in movie form with Katherine Hepburn in the starring role. Jean Giraudoux was famous for his style as the “Theatre of Language”. His plays’ meanings are transmitted not by the action, but by words. Also the author of such critically acclaimed plays as “Ondine”, “The Enchanted”, and “Siegfried”, Giraudoux died in 1944. A highly recommended attraction of your spring term, “The Madwoman of Chaillot” is not to be missed! Be there on June 7 or 8! MADNESS POWER "All The News That Fits CAPITOL CAMPUS - MIDDLETOWN, PA AROUND THE CAMPUS Student Involvement In response to the results of the Student Power Referendum, the Committee for Student Involvement has formulated a proposal consisting of three recommendations. 1. That a Community Council (at Capitol Campus) be established. The Council would be comprised of an equal number of representatives from the faculty, students and administration, with each member’s vote carrying the same weight. The function of the Council would be to vote on those decisions which affect, directly or indirectly the student body. 2. That Housing and Food Service would be under the jurisdiction of Capitol Campus not University Park. 3. That students be included as decision makers not advisors on the committee selecting the Provost of Capitol Campus. Copies of this proposal are being submitted to members of the SGA, faculty and administration of Capitol, the Board of Trustees at University Park, and President Oswald. Copies for the students are available at the Round Table, the library and the SGA office. It is hoped that students, administration and faculty objectively and conscientiously read these recommendations. It is the responsibility of the Student body and their elected representatives to implement these proposals if they are to become a reality. Treasurer: Daniel Ekberg, Bu siness; Russ Matthews, Business. Reporting Secretary: Victoria Ward, Elementary Education. Social Science Senator: Harvey Brown, So. Sc.; Scott Davis, So. Sc.; Len Thompson, So. Sc. Dear President Oswald I am writing to express my concern about the recently proposed post of Provost at the Capitol Campus. There are two aspects which 1 believe necessitate my comment. First, I am concerned that students at Capitol are effectively involved in the search process for candidates for the position. In view of your April sth statement on principles regarding student participation in the academic affairs of the University and in light of your long standing policy of encouraging student participation in matters which affect them, and in speaking to our Director, Mr. Coleman Herpel, I am of the opinion that you will insist that students shall be effectively involved. Actual performance will demonstrate the accuracy of my opinion. Second, I believe much of my, and other interested students, concern about student involvement in the matter could have been avoided if the intent of your action had been announced to the Capitol Campus community at the same time as it was announced to the faculty. The closed announcement and the rapid search process created in many of us the infamous, and too frequently accurate, “railroad job” image. After speaking with Mr. Herpel and Dr. Duane Smith, my concerns were eased as I learned of the nature of your specific charge to the search team, viz., to include student input. I believe that the matter will work out in an acceptable manner, but I feel compelled to send you these comments. John A. Musto Station Manager Thank you for your attention. May 11 ! by Roger L.
