Home Run
Derby
by Don Dossier
Intramurals for the Spring
term started with the thud of a
bat, as six teams vied for honors
in a homerun derby held April 7
at the Athletic Building.
Unfortunately, the day was
typically April, featuring
blustery winds and temperatures
ranging in the low 40’s. As a
result of the high winds, many
possible homeruns had plenty of
altitude, but lacked distance.
The derby was won by the
Raiders, as powerful Bob Werner
smashed two pitches over the
left field fence, 220 feet. Second
place honors went to the DMZ’s
and Studs Team 1, each hitting
one homer. Young Jim Kihm
blasted the lone DMZ homer,
and Dick White had the Stud’s
only score. Ed Gregorich of the
DMZ’s smashed a pitch through
the fence in an unsuccessful try
to rewrite the Derby rules. Other
teams participating were the
XGl’s, Studs Team 2, and
Movement. Unfortunately, the
Junk forfeited due to a lack of
players. Each of the Raiders
received a certificate for winning
the event.
Softball
The first Spring term
intramural softball game was
played April 12 at the Athletic
Building. The YJC’ers trounced
the Studs, 11-1, in a real
slug-fest. The YJC’ers were led
by the hard hitting of Terry
Devenney, Joe Maschue, and
Steve Hege. Hege, who also
pitched, collected two doubles
and a homerun in three at bats.
Top hitters for the Studs were
Dick White and Steve Krumsky,
both going 3 for 3 at the plate.

HEAD SHOP
TO EXPAND
On Tuesday night, April 14,
another session of the
Campus-Community Council
was held. For those who were
not aware of this group, it is a
means for the Middletown area
citizens and Capitol Campus to
discuss common interests and
problems.
The Head Shop was invited
by the Council to discuss a new
program involving the
establishment of a “store-front,
walk-in counseling center” in
and for the youth of the
community. It would be staffed
primarily by students of Capitol
Campus. As explained by the
attending members of the Head
Shop, the extension of its
services into the community
could provide for informal
discussions on college questions,
including Scholastic Aptitude
Testing, and adaptation;
non-partisan drug counseling,
help on personal problems.
The proposal met with
enthusiastic support from the
Council. The Middletown area
representatives requested that a
formal written proposal be
submitted to them for further
study. They promised that a
reply wcu'd be received within a
week, if at all possible.

BASIS- A NEW
EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
American Higher Education is
constantly being changed for the
betterment of students. More
and more institutions are giving
more power to students in
regard to choosing the type of
education they feel is important
to their own personal needs.
This is what the proposed
Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Self-Initiated Studies will try to
accomplish.
BASIS will devote itself to
student-centered learning. It will
include untraditional field
experience as well as traditional
subjects. This program will
eliminate the structured
requirements of education which
often prevent the students from
fully developing their intellect.
It will substitute grades with a
substantial evaluation of the
student’s progress. This new
reform will also allow students
and faculty to work closely
together on a common ground.
The program will provide an
opportunity for students to
concentrate on what most
interests them. They will be able
to design their own programs,
which will be of great benefit to
them. The experience gained will
help them to better know
themselves and the world and
hopefully to live better as a
result of these experiences from
the self-initiated studies.
Because the proposal is
student and teacher centered,
teachers must be included in the
curriculum. The teachers may
offer independent studies or
field experience depending on
the student. Each student will
assign himself to a BASIS
faculty and they will work
together to design a specific
program of study for that
particular student. The faculty
member will also keep a half
teaching load to keep in touch
with the college community.
The BASIS Committee is
composed of faculty and
students. Some of the faculty
members are Herbert S.

The faculty and interested
students will form a recruiting
term for admitting students into
the program. This team will
work closely with the Director
of Academic Services, in that,
they will give him a description
of the Program—its ideas,
expectations and types of
students interested. The
committee will also visit other
campuses to explain the nature
of the BASIS Program. The
information gathered are
examples of the feelings of this
committee toward this program.
This program, if accepted,
will enable students to exercise
their abilities in a way that will
benefit them. They will be able
to really enjoy their education
because it will be designed by
them. Above 'all they will gain
valuable experience from this
type of self-initiated learning
which is what education is
actually about—learning through
experience.
