It all started last spring when
Jerry South decided that it
might be a good idea to get all
the student organization leaders
together before the fall term
started. After much planning
and arranging, the idea became
reality when a bunch of us came
to the campus on September 12.
The original idea was for the
students to get together with
themselves and with some
administration members to
discuss and plan for the coming
year. Unfortunately, this
reporter was unable to attend all
the organization meetings, but I
do know that the conference
was successful in many respects.
SGA had several productive
meetings, the Cultural
Committee planned its program,
and the Presidents Council and
other groups met to discuss the
coming year.
But it was not all work and
no play-or so we thought. On
the afternoon of the first day,
they struck. We were at the
South estate near Middletown
for a cookout and loosening up
session. And we were doing our
best to loosen up by tossing a
frisbee and a football around.
(We also get to murder our own
food over a charcoal fire.) At
some point in the game, the
football landed by one of those
innocent-looking streams that
we used to see in cigarette
commercials. That’s when they
struck.

Bees Attack SGA
Killer
Senator Harvey Brown and
Denny Hassler, and SGA V.P.
Caddie Labar went to retreive
the ball and literally ran into a
hornets’ nest. Actually, they
were yellow jackets and more
painful than hornets. Not only
that, but the yellow jacket is a
tenacious little s.o.b. (not to be
confused with ESSO-Bee). The
angry bees followed our startled
senators, who were making
appropriate gestures and
grimmaces, to the main body of
the conference. While there, the
bees also stung our host and his
new assistant. The entire
incident lasted only a few
seconds-our senators can run
faster than hell-but left its mark
on the hands, eyes and arms of
the participants. For those of us
who escaped, it was a lovely
afternoon. And even the injured
among us weathered quite well.
The big news of the
conference is that the SGA
passed a budget. Those of you
who were here, remember that it
many weeks of torture to pass
the budget last year. You may
have heard, too, that last year
was the first year that the SGA
constitution was not changed.
Not that they didn’t try. But
this year the SGA is not taking
any chances. The conference
proved useful in getting the new
constitution ready for
ratification. Pending proper
typing and a few necessary
changes, we should vote on the

new constitution soon.
Perhaps the best parts of the
conference, though, were the
parts that cannot be properly
explained. These were the
planned and spontaneous bull
sessions which occurred over the
two day event. We all had
opportunities to discuss, bitch,
question and learn about this
campus. We learned to know
each other a bit better and
maybe even to work together..
At the end of the conference,
everyone involved agreed that
the conference was useful and
productive. We decided to plan
one for next year and to meet
again at various times
throughout this year as well. If it
did nothing else, the conference
started communication among
us. We got it started in spite of
differences of opinion or the bee
attach. So, let’s not allow any
s.o.bee stop it at least for a
while.
A softball team made up of
faculty and staff members of all
sexes offers a formal challenge
to any student coed team which
would like to play (and get
beaten, of course) this fell.
Call Bob Stanley at Ext. 751
to schedule games. If no answer,
call Ext. 733 to leave a message.
