Headlining track and field, Canadian flash Ben Johnson sprinted a new world record of 9.79 to defeat Carl Lewis in the long awaited 100 meter dash showdown. The 100 meter final produced another first as four sprinters ran under ten seconds. Johnson's winning time was followed by Lewis (9.92), Great Britain's Lynford Christie (9.97) and America’s Calvin Smith ’ (9.99). In the women's 100 meter, fast and fashionable Florence Griffith- Joyner, "the world’s fastest woman", ran away with the gold in an Olympic record time of 10.54.
