One week of Olympic action is
in the books, complete with records,
upsets and controversy.
Headlining track and field,
Canadian flash Ben Johnson sprinted
a new world record of 9.79 to defeat
Carl Lewis in the long awaited 100
meter dash showdown. The 100
meter final produced another first as
four sprinters ran under ten seconds.
Johnson's winning time was
followed by Lewis (9.92), Great
Britain's Lynford Christie (9.97) and
America’s Calvin Smith ’ (9.99).
In the women's 100 meter, fast
and fashionable Florence Griffith-
Joyner, "the world’s fastest woman",
ran away with the gold in an
Olympic record time of 10.54.
Evelyn Ashford took the silver for
the U.S.A. with a time of 10.83.

occurred when high jumper Hollis
Conway leaped 7'-8 3/4 ' to grab the
silver medal. Other American
performances included Roger
Kingdom’s Olympic record time of
13.17 in the quarterfinals of the 110
meter high hurdles, and a respectable
fifth place showing for Charlie
Simpkins in the triple jump.
In aquatics, three Americans ran
up the medal count. All-around
swimmer Matt Biondi collected four
golds, a silver and a bronze; 17 year-

American Athletes Stage

Egypt, paced by the 18-point
performances of Charles D. Smith
and Dan Majerle.

advantages of returning to college

life is very enjoyable to him and he
feels getting an education and being

U.S. Briefs:
-- The Boxing team took a blow to
the chin when Anthony Hembrick
was disqualified from competing for
"showing up three minutes late.”
-- The gold medal victory for Andre
Phillips in the 400 meter hurdles
marked the first time Phillips ever
defeated Edwin Moses. Phillips
didn’t make the U.S. team for Los
Angeles in 1984.
-- Guard Mitch Richmond has been
noted as being the best all-around
athlete on the basketball team. He
will be counted on heavily by Coach
Thompson to pick up the load
vacated by several injured players.
-- The current starting lineup for the
basketball squad is as follows;
forward- Dan Majerle (Central
Michigan); forward- Danny Manning
(Kansas); center- David Robinson
a full-time student is much better
than working full-time or even part
time.
He looks upon this college
experience as a so-called renaissance
of his youth. Bob is very happy
and plans to take full advantage of
the opportunities before him. He
wants to make the most of his life.

deserves a lot of credit and the best

Seroka's short-range goals are
simple. He wants to get to know
the faculty and students better. "We
have the best faculty in the college,
and they deserve more recognition
for what they are doing," he said of
the Humanities and Social Sciences
faculty.
Finally, he wants to survive the
winter—he has only seen snow
twice in the last ten years. Scroka
has no plans for leaving Behrend.
He likes it here, and he plans to
stay.
