Crime Fighters Honored

For the past five years the
Pennsylvania Commission on
Crime Prevention and Delinquency
has annually awarded 24
Pennsylvania residents Ist, 2nd, and
3rd place certificates for services
donated to the community in crime
prevention.
This year Lisa Marie Lyle and
Lori Davison, former Behrend
students at University Park, and
Donald Wolfgong, lab technician,
have been awarded 3rd place
certificates for their zealous effort in

in the primary election. In the Apr. 26 primary voters will choose
candidates to run under Republican and Democratic party banners for
several offices including President, United States Senate, Congress, and
attorney general.
In Pennsylvania, citizens must be enrolled in a qualified political
party to vote in the primary. To register to vote in the primary an
individual must be 18 years old on or before the day after the election.
Further details are included in registration applications available at
district and area public offices.
Individuals who have not voted recently should check with the voter
registration office at the courthouse in Erie to determine if their
registration is current.
McMannis Scholarship The McMannis Educational Trust
Fund offers scholarships to students with good academic promise. To
receive an application write to: Mr. Fred Sciber, Administrator, 6170
Central Ave., Suite F, St. Petersburg, FL 33707. Awards arc based on
academic performance. Financial need is a consideration. The Financial
Aid Office has information available about this and other scholarships
available.
Education Majors Scholarships available. The Financial Aid
Office has applications available for the Paul Douglas Teacher
Scholarship (any ED' major) and Scholars in Education (Math and
Science Education ). We also have information on a variety of other
scholarships available to students majoring in Education.
Masters of Cartoon Art A survey of the best newspaper
cartoon art will be on display at the Erie Art Museum from Mar. 13 to
Apr. 17. From the Yellow Kid to Peanuts, Krazy Kat to Garfield, this
outstanding exhibition is selected from the collection of the Museum of
Cartoon Art. The Museum is also sponsoring an adult basketry
workshop on Mar. 19, a macrame workshop on Mar. 26, and the lecture
series "Exploring Stained Glass" on Mar. 22 and 31. For more

Prevent Drinking and Driving Four local clubs and taverns
have joined Penn State-Behrend's Designated Driver program. On Wed.
and Fri. nights, free non-alcoholic drink of your choice is offered by the
following: Brookside Inn (Fridays), Dr. Feelgood's (Wednesdays), The
King's Rook (Fridays), The Plymouth Tavern (Fridays) and the Stadium
Lounge (Fridays). Any Penn State-Behrend student, faculty or staff
member who is over 21 and has proper I.D. can participate in the
Designated Driver Program.
Beyond War Charles Shaughnessy, who portrays Capt. Shane
Donovan in "Days of Our Lives" will appear at a dinner/lecture Sat.,
Mar. 19 from 6-9 p.m. at Villa Maria College. The cost is $8 for the
general public and $6 for all college students with I.D. Mr.
Shaughnessy is a member of the non-political organization Beyond War
and will speak on - the vital issue of avoiding nuclear war through
knowledge and understanding. The public is invited to attend. For

Pioneers of Bchrend's Crime
Watch Program, the three arc also

Services Officer Todd Alan, another
pioneer of the program, added that
"Our Crime Watch Program is an
ongoing thing. We have 7 groups

Associate Professor of Industrial
Engineering Anthony Salvia has
been invited to speak on Quality
Control Education at the Seventh
Annual Conference of the Israeli
Society for Quality Insurance in
Tel Aviv, Israel.
Salvia's invitation was a
surprise that came in a letter from
Professor Amos Notea of the Israeli
Institute of Technology.
The invitation was prompted by
an article Salvia had written on
quality control education, the
application of simple management
and statistical tools to
manufacturing as well as non-

University. Goldsmith said that the
Senate meetings arc conducted in a
manner similar to that in the House
of. Representatives. Each Senator is
assigned a scat and is recognized
manufacturing enterprises. The
article, which appeared in the Aug.
1987 edition of "Quality Progress",
hit a nerve in the quality control
community, drawing numerous
letters to the editor , about a dozen
of which were published.
The article asked the questions:
Why isn't quality control education
taught to students? Don't we have a
responsibility to teach quality
control education? If yes, who is
going to teach it?" And to which
students do we teach it?
These questions hit home with a
lot of people in the quality control
community and Salvia's invitation
shows that quality control education
is a world-wide concern.
