For most students it's either football games and wild victory parties, or enor mously-sized classes and being just an ID number with no name. But to a lot of Behrend students, it's a combination of both. "Should I stay at Behrend for four years, or transfer to University Park?" you ask. Well, if you're asking yourself this question, I've got some good news for you. Feb. 17 Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) is sponsoring a reception that can answer your questions about transferring. The reception will take place in the Reed 2nd floor lobby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to anyone in terested. The reception is designed to inform students of the four-year programs availale here. UP: the Mecca of Penn Staters Michael Chiteman, ODK Faculty Secretary, about the reception and their feelings about students staying here for a full four-year program. "A lot of people are coming here as juniors and seniors from other campuses or univerities;" said Chiteman. This has a lot to do with the fact that Behrend now offers 25 dif ferent majors in three different divisions ranging from Accounting to Chemistry or Political Science. One concern students have about their Behrend degrees is the head ing on their diploma. According to Chiteman, no matter what PSU campus a student graduates from, the main heading on the diploma will read "The Pennsylvania State University." If you're graduating from Behrend, "The Behrend Col lege" will appear below the PSU main heading. Applegate, graduating in May, is very pleased to be graduating from on Page 81 ! by Lisa Haim Collegian Editor Do you possess good leadership abilities? Would you like to possibly receive money for those abilities? If so, and von are a full time student in good academic standing, you may be eligible for the Edward P. & Barbara F. Junker Scholarship. Mr. Junker, the Alumni Fellow, donated $50,000 to Behrend and the interest from that money is being used for the scholarship. The value of the scholarship is approximately $5,000 and will be divided accordingly depending on the number of students that apply and are chosen. The criteria are: the student must be actively involved, show outstanding leadership, be in good academic standing (2.0), and be returning to Bchrend for Fall Semester. Financial need is not a consideration. Students coming to Behrend from other commonwealth campuses can also be considered for the scholarship. A scholarship committee will consist of two graduating students, three faculty, and two staff members. The committee will review the applications and decide on the number of recipients and consequently the amount to be awarded. The applicants will be asked to interview with a member of the committee and based on the interviews and the applications, the final recipients will be chosen. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office and will con sist of essay questions and questions dealing with the involvement of the student. The deadline is March 15th and they can be submitted to the Financial Aid Office. The winners will be notified by April Ist and will be honored at the Honors and Awards Convocation, Sun. April 17. I think it would be a lot more difficult to do things like that at UP; although they (opportunities) are available, you have a lot better chance of doing it here," said Applegate. Applegate and Chiteman noted other advantages of staying at Be hrend to complete programs of study. In addition to location con tinuity, Applegate added the issue of the readjustment necessary when transferring. Class sizes go down as you climb up the class levels, Ap plegate said, but he pointed out that it's only relative; "the sizes go down, but they may go down to 80 people," added Applegate. Chiteman added that the oppor tunity to work as an intern with your professor is so much greater (at Behrend), since competition is less fierce. When there are several hundred other students in your major trying for the same inter nship, it "makes you wonder what your chances are," said Chiteman. Applegate and Chitcman strongly recommend attending the Feb. 17 reception if transferring is one of your concerns. •More infor mation can be obtained from Ed Applegate at 898-6912 or from Michael Chiteman at 898-6260.
