Youth hurts
by David Bruce
Collegian Sports Editor
The Lady Lions current losing
streak has Coach Karin Sabotta
baffled. "I don't know what's the
matter...we are young and maybe
we haven't grown together yet, it
just takes time. They have physical
ability, but we have to get mentally
together," said Sabotta.
Due to the high student turnover
rate at Behrend, a lack of maturity
is common among the school's
sports teams, and this year's bas
ketball team is no exception. Seven
of the 10 players are either fresh
men or sophomores as are four of
the five starters.
This lack of experience has af
fected a key team element: leader
ship. "Some of our older players
are very hard on themselves, they
overreach at times, it is not a lack
of effort, perhaps they overanalyze
the situation," said Sabotta. "We
VOLLEYBALL-A-THON
by David Bruce
Collegian Sports Editor
The women's volleyball team is
looking for a few good men and
women to participate in their an
nual volleyball-a-thon. This year's
event takes place on Feb.lB from
9pm to tarn and it will help raise
money for new warm-ups and
shoes for the players.
The team has been searching for
squads to play against, so far
several Behrend organizations have
expressed interest,including one of
the fraternities. This year, the team
will raise additional money by
charging these squads an entrance
fee-S1 per player. However, if one
of these squads wins their match,
$5 of the fee will be refunded.
"Last year we raised $600...1'd
like to get $BOO this year," said
Coach Jan Wilson,"the girl who
signs the most pledges will win
either two free ski passes or dinner
for two at the Waterfall Restaurant.
The volleyball-a-thou serves as a
warm-up for the men's season and
the women's spring season. The
men play their first match Feb. 6,
while the women begin next month.

don't seem to have control of the
game, they get behind and then
they panic... they don't play with
confidence."
This was evident in the game
against Geneva on Febuary 2. They
were within three points with seven
minutes left in the game, but their
game fell apart and they lost by 22,
72-50. "We missed inside shots...it
shows a lack of confidence and
concentration," said Sabotta.
In the game, Behrend committed
an abnormally high 29 fouls, and
shot only 26 percent from the field.
Lisa Butch was the leading scorer
with 13 points and Erica Scribner
added 10. "Erica is coming on
really well, she did not play much
early, but now she is second or
third off the bench...she makes
things happen," said Sabotta.
In other recent games, the Lady
Lions lost to number-one ranked St.
John Ficher, 94-104 and to Edin-

boro 85-64. In the St. John Fisher
game, Lisa Dorenkamp scored 19
points and Connie Armstrong had
six rerounds. High scorer against
Edinboro was Michele Madison
with 16 points, and she tied for
leading rebounder with Denise
McCloskey with 11.
Lion guard Lisa Dorenkamp is
officially ranked in the latest issue
of NCAA News for three-point
field goals made per game.
Dorenkamp is averaging 3.0 per
game and is shooting 36 percent
from that distance. Due to her ef
forts the team is ranked second in
the same category averaging 3.3
three-points per game.
The Lady lions will play Elmira
College on Feb. 6 at Erie Hall
before traveling to play SUNY-
Brockport on Feb.B and the Univ.
of Buffalo on Feb.lo. The women
then play Gannon at home on
Feb.ls and Westminister on Feb.l9

You

Have you ever become really
angered over the futile trades your
favorite professional sports team
has made? It is obvious that some
teams make all the great trades
while others seem to flounder every
year. Well, now is your chance to
be a general manager for your
favorite team.
This is how it works. You, the
sports fan, decide on which team in
which professional sport you would
like to represent. You submit your
ideas to the Collegian office and
your ideas are then commented on.

Congratulations to this week's
Athletes of the Week, Gene Gor
niak and Lisa Butch.
Gene Gomiak, the Lion's six
foot seven inch forward, played
impressively under the basket this
past week. After his amazing 22-
point, 23-rebound performance
against Mercyhurst, Gene con
tinued his dominance under the
boards with a 22-point, 18-rebound
display against Pitt-Bradford. Gene
finished the week with an 11-point,
14-rebound, seven blocked shot
game against Bethany. Not only did
Gene's performance win him this
prestigious award, but it also won
him a spot on the ECAC division
111 Honor Roll.
Lisa Butch, the Lady Lion's
starting guard, did not just have a
great week, but has played in
credible basketball the entire
season. Averaging 11.3-points, 3.7-
rebounds, 1.9-assists, and 2-steals a
game, she is described by coach
Karin Sobotta as, "the best athlete
on the team." Combining this con
sistent play with a constant 100
percent effort makes Lisa Butch a
true team leader.
Both Gene and Lisa will recieve
dinner for two at Barbato'shin
recognition of their achievements.

Make the Trade...
Have your ideas heard. Stop
complaining and take some action.
Did the Cardinals make a mistake
by not signing Jack Clark? Are the
Stealers doomed without an N.F.L.
caliber quarterback? The following
student submissions are examples
of how the process works. If you
disagree with my replies, let me

Reply: Impossible, McCormick is
no longer a 76'er. He was traded,
along with Roy Hinson, to the Nets.
Even if we ignore this fact, the
tmde would never take place.
Washington does not need two
more players over 6' 10". Terry
Catledge and Manute 80l provide
enough beef for the Bullets front
line. Moses will finish his career in
the nation's capital.
Football
Action: " The Steelers need a real
quarterback. How about trading
Walter Ambercrombie and this
year's number two draft pick to
Cincinatti for Boomer Esiason or to
Tampa Bay for Steve Deberg?"
Mike Hughes, Bth semester,
Psychology.
Reply: Mike this is a very popular
idea, several other students submit
ted similar propocalc. It is obvious
that Pittsburgh needs a new
quarterback. The Steelers should
try to get -Deßerg; he could be had
for this price. If the Steelers were to
draft a quarterback this year, De-
Berg could keep the competitive
until the draft pick is ready to take
over.

Reply: How can you fire a coach
who is in second place with a
record of 30 wins to 19 losses? The
Bruins will make the playoffs this
year. How far they get depends on
O'Reilly. He was a winning player .
and is now a winning coach. Shake
up the organization, ut do not get
rid of O'Reilly.
Action: " The Penguins should
trade this years' first round draft
pick and a minor league player to
the New York Rangers for goalie,
Bob Froese." Tom Rovnak, 2nd
semester, Engineering.
Reply: The Penguins could defi
nately use a goalie with the talents
of Bob Froese, but I don't think
that New York would bite. The
Rangers have the best one-two goal
tending pair in the league. Froese
and John Vanbiesbrouck are quality
players. I do not think that your of
fer is good enough.
Baseball
Action: " The Twins should ship
Gary Gaetti to Detroit for Jack
Morris." -- John Quinones, 2nd
semester, Business.
Reply: The Twins could use
another starter to accompany Frank
Viola. They could also use a
dominant right hander: Jack Morris
would fullfill both needs. The
Tigers need a third baseman. They
could also use someone to make up
for the 30 homeruns and 100 RBl's
they lost with Kirk Gibson. This
trade makes too much sense to take
Dlace.
