Madison fouled out mid way through the second half, al though she was nowhere near a Lady Laker when the whistle blew. Trailing by seven points with under two minutes to play, Dorcnkamp went to work. Hcr seventh three pointer of the night came at the 40- second mark, giving the Lions a 62-61 lead. Tenacious defense by Bchrcnd prevailed by a 62-61 mar gin. Although Dorcnkamp was clearly the star of the game, much credit has to go to the other players who picked up the slack in Madison's absence. Tammy Altsman played nearly every minute of the game and hustled every second. The new sports facillity being planned should be a welcome addition to Behrend athletics but Mike is also hoping for some im provements in the baseball program. " I'm looking forward to increased fan support and con tributions to help fund euipment and playing field improvements in cluding permanent fencing and dugouts to get us a much needed ballpark effect. " Mike also thinks that such improvements will help change the attitude of players con sidering athletics at Behrend. In a final note, Mike Bari iden tified the people that helped him the most through many of his travels and career changes, " I attribute all of the sucess that I have had in my life to my mother and father, who backed me all the way through everything I wanted to do and gave me the guidance to succeed in photo by Paul Roach life." DeMoss did a great job off the bench. Things went sour for the women in the Bchrend-Days Inn Women's basketball classic. They bowed in the opener to Dyke College by the score of 71-53. Dyke outshot the Lions by a 31-14 margin from the floor, but only hit nine of 11 free throws compared to Behrend's 23 of 30. Michele Madison and Lisa Dorenkamp again led the way, scor ing 19 and 16 points, respectively. The Lions fell to Ottcrbain at the Erie Civic Center, leaving them with a third place finish in the tournament. Madison was the lead ing scorer for Bchrcnd with 25 points, and was named to the all tournament team. Mike graduated from Wesleyan with a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education with a Minor in psychology. He also left there with a strong interest in adult physiology. This interest took him to Sunnyvale, California where he worked in an adult fitness program. After six months in the sun, Mike realized that he could better use his talents as.a coach. by David Bruce Collegian Sports Editor Congratulations to Gary Zang and Michelle Madison, this issue's Athletes of the Week. Gary has truly led the the Lions• offensively, scoring 29 points against Gannon and 20 points versus Theil. Coach Zimmerman said,"He's shooting the ball well, in fact, he should be ranked na tionally for field goal percentage." To be exact, Gary is shooting 57 percent from the field in addition to averaging 16.6 points and grabbing 8.2 rebounds per game. For good measure, Gary even has 10 steals. Michelle has been just as much of a leader for the Lady Lions, scor ing 44 points in the Behrend-Days Inn Tournament and was named to the all-tournament team. She averages 16.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. "She has worked a lot this year," said Coach Sabotta,"She's playing with more intensity and confidence. In, the Fredonia Tournament, she had more points and rebounds than anybody and should have been named to that tournament team as well." Both Gary and Michelle will receive dinner for two at Barbatos in recognition of their accomplishments. Behrendettes ... by Angela Papalco Colllegian Staff Writer As the semester's end approaches, basketball season begins. It brings certain spirit building activities such as; cheerleaders, pep band, the Lion and the Behrendettes, Behrend's own dance squad. This is only the second year for the Behrendettes and already they arc beginning to make significant progress. The Bchrendettes were started last year by Angie Busbee. This season Susanna Jalosky was interested in bringing it baCk. She made phone calls and recieved great co-operation from the Inter-Club- Council President Carl Dabler and Assistant Dean of Student Services John Downey. All are new to the rules and regulations as well as the overall organization of the club. Beginning with 25 interested participants (of which four were men, a new twist for the Bchrcndettes), commitment grew and the time for performing got closer and some dropped out leaving the group with eleven members. Remaining arc nine freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior. The elections for the group as a club were held during the last week of September and the results were as follows: Susanna Jalosky, president; Camille Chang, vice-president; Kakila Johnson, secretary; and Scott Lewis, treasurer. The Behrendettes hope to perform at half time for approximately two minutes. All the routines his year will be new. Camille is the backbone of the dance routines. She has taken dance lessons for 10 years and taught for six. Kakilla works closely with her in developing new dance numbers. But it is also a group effort. Together they work to develop something they can all approve of. They practice three days a week, un less they find it necessary for extra rehersals. After speaking with Sue, she said that initial enthusiasm from the group was really good, But now it appears to be a bit of a struggle. It's a different bunch of people and they're all used to a particular style of dancing. The three guys that help to form the Behrendettes arc: Scott Reinhardt, Scott Lewis and Scott Argio. Suc admits that along with her initial shock at their interest she wasn't sure as to their sincerity. They're very enthusiastic. "It can work," she says, "as long as they're serious about it. The guys will add an accent to the group as well as diversity for us this year," explained Suc. This group has a lot of poten tial. The Bchrendettes hope to perform at home basketball games during the Spring semester. photos by Rick Brooks Bmr.haigiti**.
