Phil Giordano's Jazz Quintet
painted colorful pictures with their
instruments and smooth, articulate
playing styles.
The • Philadelphian musician •
started his Jazz Ensemble career in
1974 and has been working with his -
current group for about seven
months. The ensemble consists of;
Phil on drums, Tony DeSantis on
trumpet; John Simon playing a
very sassy sax, Chris Taylor on the
piano, and Paul Klinefelter strum
ming intensely on the upright bass.
The group played various jazz
pieces ranging fro originals like
"Saying Goodbye" by John Simon
to some standards such
as" Tangerine" expressed just such
an image. The sensations caused by
listening to the music brought forth
an image of a ripe, sweet tangeine
bursting with flavor. It made you
want to peel one, devour it and im
mediately sink into another one.
Very Fresh!
The ballad entitled "Saying
Goodbye" moved the imagination
to experience a final meeting bet
ween two very special friends- or
lovers. It suggested sequences of an
actual- meeting, tenderness,
nostalgia, happiness, the realizticin
of finality and then the sadness of
'saying goodbye.

picture. The. Silver Screen and
Technicolor fit the bill much more
appropriately. Picture this: A very
sharp looking cosmopolitan lady,
Nancy, window shopping in New
York on one bright, energized mor
ning dashing from one boutique to
the next. She Then relaxes at a
sidewalk cafe' drinking a cup of
honeyed tea. Regaining strength,
she hails a taxi for an exciting,
nonstop ride of errands/ Upon ar
rival to her ultra-mod apartment,
she relaxes by enjoying another cup
of tea. Next she prepares for a din
ner party. From the music you can
see her meeting people at the door,
mingling with them, and then danc
ing in the crowd. Finally, she sees
the last person out the front door
and leans on the bannister with a
twinkle in her eye. Such a day!
Such a piece! Bravo!
"Unit 7" and "Old Devil
Moon" held just as much potential
for the imagination to create with.
Whether' using imagery or just
listening to the group's musical
finesse, the audience enjoyed the
Quintet's performance thoroughly.
After the performance, the
ensemble gave_ a little jazz
workshop so that interested people
in the audience could learn and
understand jazz- style-and "how it
works" better. Thank's Phil. How
about an encore net-year?

On October 24, Alpha Sigma
Alpha girls from all over the coun
try will don gold and white ribbons
a very special event. This celebra
tion isn't just for anyone, but for
one distinct group , of girls wearing
their red and white letters proudly
around campus, the Alpha Sigs!
In 1901 the national sorority of
Alpha Sigma Alpha began with five
determined girls at Longwood Col
lege, Farmville, Virginia. Karen
Courtney, President of -Alpha
Sigma Alpha at Behrend, said with
a smile, "Alpha Sigma Alpha was
the first sorority started in the 20th
century."
With the help of Tammy Star
cher, Behrend became a part of the
Alpha family nearly two years ago.
Tammy, a former student of
Behrend, wrote to every sorority at
State College asking if any of them
would be interested in starting a
chapter at Behrend. The Alpha Sigs
said yes!
On March 23,.1986, twenty-three
eager girls were inducted as pledges
in Alpha Sigma Alpha, and given a
grueling contract to fulfill within
two years before they could be in
stalled as a chapter.
This contract entailed many task
such as; writing a constitution, do
ing different community projects,
organizing fund raisers, and com
pleting many more assignments.
