Weather may "foul-up" baseball season
by Angela Papaleo
Collegian Staff Writer
Those of you that are familiar
with Erie weather know how un
predictable it can be. Which actual
ly would make no diffeience to
you, unless of course you were a
baseball player, especially a Penn
State-Behrend baseball player. This
is the case for about 16 guys
'waiting to play their first league
game.
The men's varsity baseball team
was supposed to have begun their
season March 28 and lasting until
May 2. But due to weather hazards
they've had to reschedule 8 games.
As it stands now the team may end
up playing a game a day for the
next couple weeks. However, this
hasn't hindered any attitudes, they
all anxiously await the first day.
The team consists of one junior,
three sophomores and the rest
freshmen. The captains are
sophomore Fred Turba and junior
Dave Bruce. The-most-promising
player seen thus far by coach Mike
Ban would,have to be freshman
Scott Ebersol. Scott is the team's
catcher. While competing over Spr
ing Break in Florida Scott hit .355.
Unfortunately he was stricken with
an arm injury. However, this did
not prevent Scott from par
ticipating in every game and his
performance was commendable
and impressive. Regrettfully the
team will lose Scott as his major
will be taking him down to Univer
sity Park.
Beyond the regular schedule and
the only playing seen this far has
been down in Florida and West
Virginia. The latter being about a
month ago, the team hasn't had
and opportunity to better the
mistakes they experienced. Due to
the weather and the collision with
the basketball team, the baseball
team had a difficult time practic

ing. The weather forced them in
side and the batting cage was not
accessible bacause of its size caus
ing interference with the basketball
team. Therefore the pitchers had
no batters to throw to. This was a
contribution to their performance
in Florida, plus the fact that they
were unable to hit indoors. All
things considered, they really
didn't: do that bad.-
The team is currently hitting
.270. " They need to be over .300
as a team ," says coach Mike Bari.
The pitching needs to be improved
also. "The kids are young,

Hites is a pitcher and third

was in the fall.
This past week the womens soft

only allowed five hits. Hites scored
three runs and had four steals in
the Cubs victory.
Wetzel is a freshman shortstop

against Allegheny Reese played
good defense. "I am impressed
because Reese has been improving
over the season,"
Hites and Wetzel will receive a
dinner for two compliments of Bar
bato's Restaurant in Wesleyville
