Or perhaps you would rather see yourself eating tacos in Mexico. Ron Santos Donny Iris and the Cruisers to rock at Behrend's first concert by Cheryl Nietupski Collegian Staff Writer For the first time in the history of Behrend College,_ Donny Iris and The Cruisers will be entertain ing Behrend students on March 21st! The concert was formerly sug gested for Behrend Campus by the Student Programming Council (SPC) but, until just recently, the task of actually bringing them here turned out to be a unlikely event. The whole idea came about when STUDENT VOICE By Julie Karasinski Collegian Feature Editor Even just sleeping till noon every day after staying up with David Letterman and eating home cooked Break and came up with these in teresting replies: Progressive Talent (an organiza tion that seeks out newly-forming rock groups and finds out when the well-known groups will be in town) approached Behrend with a possi ble "act" for March 20th or 21st. The talent agency told Karin Shrum, chairperson for the concert committee, that the "act" was Donny Iris and The Cruisers! Susan Sciullo, 2nd semester, DUS--"l'd say going to Hawaii for a week, just laying out and meeting people and having fun, dancing, staying up all night. I'd say going dancing with my friends, getting a tan, going somewhere where it's really nice and warm, getting away from it all, forgetting everything, daydreaming all day." "What is your Spring Break fantasy? possible open dates to perform in Erie. . Behrend has worked closely in the past with the talent agency to bring about a lot of entertainment for the students. This concert has been one of the best events to come from Progressive Talent to Behrend. "Without the agency, we would not have been able to con tact the group," said Karin Shrum. Donny Iris is originally from Ellwood City, PA, located about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. His music is well-known--especially 898-6286 by Julie Karasinski Collegian Feature Editor Behrend's SCUBA Club, headed by MSG Young, will be going to Florida to dive in the waters off the shores of Key West. Leaving on the 26th of Feb., the lucky divers will travel by van and arrive on Satur day, February 28th. An Army SCUBA school in Key West will host the group of 19 Behrend divers for their 11 day Spring Break vacation. Although many of the divers are to be certified in Florida, some are already certified. For those who have their certification, advanced around our local areas. The group has previously entertained Erie au diences in the last few years at Mer cyhurst and Gannon College. Don ny Iris and The Cruisers have also made the top 40 charts. Songs such as "Do You Compute?," "The Wrapper," "Ah Leah," "She's So Wild," and "Shock Treatment" are just a few of their most popular. The most recent release of their albums was "No Muss, No Fuss." Other albums include: "Back On The Streets," "The High And The Mighty," "Fortune SCUBA club to dive in Florida courses such as Advanced Open water, Hunting ollection, Sear ch•ecovery (salvage) and Night Diver are offered. In addition to the dives made in Key West, dives at Crystal River, Ginnie Springs, Peacock Springs and Troy Springs, where divers can see a Civil War wreck and manatees, are planned. Diving isn't the only fun schedul ed for the trip. The divers will also be seeing the sights of Key West, having a beach picnic, going night fishing and having plenty of free time in which they can swim at the beach, lay in the sun, search for seashells, send postcards, or do whatever pleases them most! For the certified divers the trip 410," and "King Cole." The Student Programming Council and Student Government Association are co-sponsoring the upcoming concert. The SPC treasury is funding $4,000 of the cost and SGA is supplying the other $3,000 that is needed. Karin Shrum said the goal (for both organizations) is to bring someone "big" to our campus that is affor dable and will have a big impact on the students. THERE WILL BE NO RESERVED SEATS FOR THIS eatures costs only $139, which includes van costs (gas etc.), meals (from the mess hall at the Army bases), and air fills. For those who will be get ting certified in Florida, an addi tional $6O is required to pay for certification. The advanced courses are offered at $5O. To help defray the expenses, some of the divers made their own weight belts from lead that was poured in the supply room of the Behrend Science building on Saturday, Feb. 7. After 7 days in the salt water and sun of Florida, the tanned divers will return on Sunday, March Bth, to the snow and schoolwork of Behrend life. EVENT. The first people through the doors will get the best seats, so don't procrastinate! Every student is allowed to purchase only one ticket per ID card and Student Ac tivities Card. This event will also be open to the public. Since only a maximum number of 1,300 students will be able to fill Erie Hall, it is essential that you buy your tickets early. Tickets will go on sale beginning after Spring Break from March 9 through March 13. They can be purchased at the RUB desk for $3 per student or at the very low price of $1 for students with an Activities Card! These tickets will also be sold to the public for S 7 per person beginning March 13 through the 21st, the day of the concert. As a special attraction to the concert, "Endless Summer" will be opening for Donny Iris and The Cruisers at 8:00 p. m. in Erie Hall. "Endless Summer" performed last month at the "Beach Party."
