Capital Campaign stimulates Behrend's
growth as community college
by Greg Rathbun
Collegian Staff Writer
Penn State will officially start their 200 million
dollar Capital Campaign on Sept. 13, 1986.
"A capital campaign is usually a very intensive ef
fort over a limited number of years to raise large
amounts of money in support of college programs,"
said Susan Black-Keim, Director of Development in
University Relations.
. The money raised by the campaign can be used for
buildings, professoi - ships and scholarships.
Money recently raised at Behrend erected the
Harnmermill/Zum Building and equipment for that
building. Behrend raised seven million in what is call
ed an advanced gift phase in its Capital Campaign.
"Before any capital campign you do a lot of
groundwork to ensure the success of that effort and
so you try to have between a third and a half of your
money already admitted before you announce it. We
were part of that advanced phase for Penn State,"
Black-Keim explained.
A capital campaign begins with each college identi
fying their needs. In Behrend's case it identified the
need for the Hammermill/Zum building; equipment
for the building, professorship and scholarship
Study: Men dominate classrooms
by Jim Schwartz
CAMBIDGE, MASS- (CPS)—
Male students tend to dominate
classroom conversations even
when the 'instructor is female, a
new Harvard study says.
Previously, • much education
research blamed women's
classroom reticence on discomfort
with having male professors.
The report is the second in as
many weeks indicating colleges
aren't always as hospitable to
women as they are to men.
Three weeks ago Congress' Of
fice- of Technology Assessment
found college teachers often steer
women away from high-paying
science and engineering careers
with subtly-discouraging
classroom behavior.

Transferring to U.P.? Housing Fair helps
_University Park, PA—Housing Fair 'B6, scheduled for Feb. 7-8, pro
vides an opportunity for students who will transfer to University Park
to explore housing opportunities on campus and in the adjacent State
College community.
The Fair will be held in the Hetzel Union Building (HUB) Ballroom
fiom 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The Saturday, Feb. 8 date is being
devoted to Commonwealth Campus students' participation.
More than 70. area property owners: managers (University and off
campus) as well as service agency representatives will be present to pro
vide. information about housing, transportation, utilities, code enforce
ment and other services. Nick Smith, a transfer from Altoona - Campus
and student host for the event, urges Commonwealth Campus students
"It's like falling in love in a way. I'm responsible
for the romance. When people come to Behrend I'm
responsible for seeing that they get told about what's
going on, that they get to know Behrend, that they
get to fall in love with Behrend," Black-Keim said.
Once the prospective donor has been wooed they
then give their donations to Behrend College. Pro
vost and Dean, John M. Lilley, "is a major player in
all of this process. One of the rules of fundraising is
that you have the right person do the asking at the
right time under the right circumstances for the right
amount. So John Lilley is often the right person,"
Black-Keim said.
Black-Keim justifies the need for this campaign
because "...Penn State only receives 23 percent of its
funding from the state so less than a fourth of your
education is paid for by tax dollars. The rest has to
be made up in tuition and gifts."
The campaign will continue through 1991.

While Krupnick notes men's

says male dominance in the
classroom is important because

as well as men in college don't
seem to be keeping up in their
careers ten years after graduation.
Studies show that marriage and
childbearing are not the main
obstacles to career success, she
adds.
Women's career problems,
Krupnick now believes, are at
least partially related to both their
restraint in participating in the
classroom and instructors' accep
tance of what they have to say.
"In the real world, the ability to
express ideas forcefully is impor
tant. It's highly correlated with
how you do in your career, "
Krupnick asserts.
