Today the women’s volleyball
team hosts Mercyhurst College
and Westminster in a home
opening, tri-match slated to begin
at 6 p.m.
“We usually beat Mercyhurst at
home but lose at their place, ”
said head coach Jan Wilson.
“Mercyhurst always has a good
team and are well coached. The
past two years we’ve been pretty
successful against Westminster
(two victories).”

Adjectives such as impressive,
magnificant or grand go out the
window in an attempt to describe
the women’s tennis teams’ home
opening match. In this case such
accolades still serve as an
underestimation of what was
achieved.
Simply put the Lady Cubs were
down right perfect against Thiel
College on Sept. 17.
Rain washed away Behrend’s
first scheduled home-match
against Mercyhurst, Sept. 10. The
Lady Cubs following match was
also postponed due to rain, Sept.
12, which was a visiting contest
vs. Gannon University.
Before the crushing of Thiel
came Behrend’s first win of the
year which was a close 5-4 deci
sion over SUNY-Fredonia on
Sept. 14.

volleyball team hosts Mercyhurst today
ticipated in a 10-team tournament
at Thiel College. Tuesday the
Lady Cubs played at Geneva
College.
In their first tournament
Behrend finished second to Cor
tland State in the Early Bird
Volleyball Invite played on Sept.
13 and 14 at the State University
of New York College at Cortland.
The Lady Cubs defeated
Nazareth College, 15-7, 15-3 and
then trimmed Cortland’s “B”
team, 15-6, 15-2 on Sept. 13.
Following on Sept. 14 Behrend
defeated LeMoyne College, 15-11,
“We’re constantly improving
as the matches go on,” said
fourth-year head coach Pam
Fischer. “This is the best team
I’ve had here so far - best attitude,
skill and a group of girls.”
Against Thiel the Lady Cubs
did not even lose a single set.
Freshman Mary Beth Grimes,
Behrend’s sixth singles player,
had the easiest time setting down
Thiel’s Jackie Labesky, 6-2, 6-0.
First and second singles players
Sharon Dollard and Kelle Cour
son respectively for the Lady
Cubs each won their first match
of the year.
Dollard turned back Thiel’s
Pam Kirker, 6-3, 6-4; while Cour

6-1. Other singles players vic

15-9 in the first round champion
ships before falling to Cortland’s
“A” team, 15-8, 15-5 in the
championship of the eight-team
tourney.
“We played really well on the
first day of the tournament and if
we can play like that all year long
we will do real well,” said Wilson.
“Most of the teams in the tourney
had taller players than us but we
just played them tough.”
Senior Kim Keller had nine aces
for the Lady Cubs in their first
three games. Teammate Lori Mc-
Clellan, a freshman, served seven
In doubles play Dollard and
Courson improved their record to
3-0 with a win over Kirker and
Goodwin, 6-1, 6-3. Lumley and
Mitchem (2nd doubles) and Ann
Weist and Phillips (3rd doubles)
also teamed up to notch wins.
“I’m really impressed with our
first and second doubles team so
far,” said Fischer. “They play
very solid, attacking the ball at the
net.”
The Lady Cubs played Canisius
(Sept. 19), Gannon (Sept. 21) and
Westminster, Tuesday which were
all home matches. Behrend next
faces Grove City in an away
match on Monday at 3 p.m.

weeks ago I predicted Penn State
to defeat Temple by a 21-7 score.
The Nittany Lions won, 27-25.
Not bad for an opening
prediction.
This week I see Penn State edg
ing Rutgers, as they did last year,
by a 24-21 count this time.
Also look for the Pittsburgh
Steelers to rebound on Monday
Night Football with a 20-17 vic
tory over the Cincinnati Bengals,
Monday night.
